McLaren’s Zak Brown Teases Red Bull Amidst High-Profile Departures: The Impact of Losing Adrian Newey
Zak Brown teases Red Bull about Adrian Newey: “Must be lovely to wish he was there…”
"Imagine having Adrian Newey right now, sitting at the table, figuring out ways to enhance the car…"
McLaren's chief, Zak Brown, suggests that Red Bull Racing has been thrown off balance due to notable exits from their team, implying that they're feeling the absence of Adrian Newey's technical guidance.
After the Italian Grand Prix, McLaren is only eight points away from Red Bull in the Formula 1 constructors' standings.
In terms of outright performance, Red Bull experienced their most disappointing outcome since last year's race in Singapore, where Max Verstappen crossed the finish line in fifth place.
Several crucial team members have departed from Red Bull, including Rob Marshall who moved to McLaren the previous year.
Newey's exit from the team was made public before the Miami Grand Prix took place earlier this year, and Jonathan Wheatley will be parting ways with the team at the close of 2024 to take up the role of team principal at Audi.
Brown has previously shown a willingness to tease, suggesting that numerous resumes from essential Red Bull personnel have been circulating, indicating a desire to depart.
After the race in Monza, while speaking to Sky Sports, Brown shared his opinion on Red Bull.
"In the end, I'm not really sure what the situation is," he mentioned. "Having Adrian Newey with us, especially at this moment to discuss car enhancements around the conference table, would be ideal. Jonathan Wheatley is still part of the team, although he's in the process of leaving. We've also welcomed Rob Marshall to our group.
"The departure of three of the top figures from Red Bull, all of whom played significant roles, undoubtedly represents a significant setback."
"Everyone experiences setbacks, but it appears the situation has become more unstable than it has been in recent times."
Brown also definitively dismissed any speculation about acquiring Newey once more.
"Brown also mentioned, 'He consistently responds to my phone calls. Although we share a strong friendship, as I've previously stated, I'm quite satisfied with my current race team.'"
It is anticipated that Newey will be moving to Aston Martin, as hinted by Sky's David Croft on Saturday, who mentioned that an announcement regarding his future might come as soon as next week.
