McLaren Chief Celebrates Team’s Success Amid Red Bull’s “Driver Challenges
McLaren's leader responds to Red Bull's "driver dilemmas"
"They've encountered a scenario in which they have two squads and a program for developing young drivers"
Zak Brown is relieved to be avoiding the challenges Red Bull is experiencing with Sergio Perez.
Red Bull has made a significant decision to continue supporting Perez despite his lackluster performance, as the season enters its second half.
In contrast, Red Bull's competitors, McLaren, boast a pair of top performers in Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
"The situation is quite complex," the CEO of McLaren commented to Sky Sports regarding Red Bull's choice to retain Perez.
They've ended up in a scenario where they have two teams and a program for young drivers.
They're in a scenario where one racer is at the forefront of the championship while another is in seventh place. This racer is talented, having secured victories in the past. It's universally acknowledged that he has the potential to win at any given moment.
Currently, it appears he's facing some difficulties. The full extent of the situation is unclear to me.
"They need to resolve it themselves. I'm glad I don't have issues with driving…"
This season, each of McLaren's racers has secured a grand prix victory, with Norris triumphing in Miami and Piastri achieving victory in Hungary.
Mercedes and their close competitors are posing a significant challenge to Red Bull's dominance at the top of the constructors' championship standings.
Brown aims for McLaren to be a top contender for both championships by 2025: "That's our goal."
"With that in mind, it's clear how rapidly this sport evolves.
"Enhancements are on the horizon for us, as well as for our rivals. I believe there's no justification for us not leading the pack in every competition."
He encapsulated McLaren's remarkable season so far: "It's definitely a pleasing sensation. The drivers, crew, and all involved have performed exceptionally well.
"Achieving top-three finishes in ten consecutive races is truly remarkable. It's exciting to be in contention for both the drivers' and manufacturers' titles as we head into the summer break."
The competition among the leading four teams is intense, with their rankings constantly changing – one moment they're in the lead, and the next, they could drop to fourth or rise to second…
"I'm extremely pleased with all that we've achieved at McLaren."
Norris holds the runner-up position in the drivers' standings, trailing Max Verstappen by 78 points. Meanwhile, McLaren ranks third among the constructors, 64 points adrift of the frontrunners, Red Bull.
"Both are crucial," emphasized Brown. "For us to clinch the constructors' title, it's essential for both our drivers to secure top positions."
The sole hiccup for McLaren occurred during Piastri's inaugural victory in an F1 grand prix.
The incident occurred following a dispute over team orders, during which Norris, after enduring several laps of pressure, permitted his teammate to overtake him.
The broader perspective is that Norris and Piastri have both emerged as victors this year.
"Brown expressed his admiration for the team, highlighting the exceptional achievement of both drivers winning races and their unwavering commitment to the team's success."
"In 2021, we clinched the top two spots, with Lando nearly matching Daniel's pace. Our team spirit is our driving force, and our drivers are the ace up our sleeve."
He remarked, "Achieving ten consecutive podium finishes isn't so bad. Finishing second in the drivers' standings, with both drivers securing victories.
"However, it's important to acknowledge that we are not infallible. Throughout the season, we've encountered mistakes. These experiences will serve as lessons, enabling us to enhance our performance."
