Max Verstappen to Mercedes in 2026: Toto Wolff’s Potential Driver Dilemma Unveiled
Acquiring Max Verstappen might cause Toto Wolff considerable challenges for F1 2026
It is suggested that Max Verstappen joining Mercedes could present Toto Wolff with significant difficulties.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff would face a difficult decision in choosing who would pair up with Max Verstappen as his teammate if he managed to attract the F1 world champion away from Red Bull.
BBC Sport's Formula 1 reporter, Andrew Benson, believes that although it seems highly improbable for Verstappen to move from Red Bull to Mercedes in 2025, the scenario could realistically occur in 2026.
Securing a deal with Mercedes would put Wolff in the position of having to make a choice between George Russell and their esteemed Formula 2 talent, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, for the remaining seat next to the driver from the Netherlands.
In response to inquiries about whether Russell might feel neglected due to Wolff's open admiration for Verstappen in a Q&A session, Benson stated: "Not at all. Mercedes has unequivocally expressed that they view Russell as a significant part of their future plans – and his exceptional performances validate this confidence. He stands among the top-tier F1 drivers, as evidenced by his track record.
In their trio of seasons as teammates, the qualifying gaps between him and Lewis Hamilton have been incredibly narrow. On average, just fractions of a second divided them in both 2022 and 2023, with Russell leading in one year and Hamilton in the alternate year.
"This year continues the trend, despite Russell leading significantly in their direct encounters with a 7-1 advantage."
Wolff has openly expressed his desire to bring Verstappen over to Mercedes. While it seems highly improbable for 2025, there's a real chance it could occur in 2026.
Should Mercedes manage to sign Verstappen for the 2026 season, it would essentially set up a direct competition in 2025 between Russell and Antonelli, assuming the latter, an Italian driver, receives a promotion, though this is still uncertain.
Given Antonelli's skill, it would still be challenging to favor him over Russell under those circumstances, especially since Russell has been competing in F1 since 2020. This scenario could present Wolff with a dilemma by 2026. However, I imagine he would consider it to be both speculative and a favorable issue to face.
BBC Sport has also disclosed that Verstappen, who is under contract with Red Bull until 2028, has a clause in his agreement allowing him to exit at his discretion.
"Benson further mentioned that this situation is linked to the role of Red Bull's motorsport consultant, Helmut Marko, who is a supporter of the Verstappen family."
"If Marko departs from Red Bull, Verstappen also has the contractual freedom to leave. It's reported that the Austrian has committed to support Verstappen's future decisions, whatever they may be."
