Marko Attributes Perez’s F1 Qualifying Woes to Psychological Struggles: A Deep Dive into the Recent ‘Total Disaster
Helmut Marko suggests Sergio Perez's recent difficulties in F1 are mental, following his latest early qualifying exit, which he labeled a 'total disaster'.
Helmut Marko, an advisor for Red Bull's racing team, has pointed out that Sergio Perez's current challenges in Formula 1 are not due to issues with his vehicle but rather stem from psychological factors.
For the second race in a row, Perez was eliminated early in the qualifying round, securing only the 16th position on the starting grid for the Canadian Grand Prix with his best time.
Following his elimination in the first qualifying round in Monaco during the prior race.
The driver from Mexico, who recently secured a contract extension with Red Bull for two more seasons, hasn't made it into the top-10 in qualifying since his appearance in the Miami Grand Prix, which was three races back.
Perez had initiated each of the initial six races from a position among the top six before experiencing a decline in his outcomes.
Max Verstappen, his teammate, secured the second spot in qualifying, narrowly missing out on the pole position to Mercedes' George Russell, despite both drivers recording the same lap times.
"Marko pointed out to ServusTV that the issue isn't with the car, as evident from Max's performance. He believes it largely boils down to a psychological aspect."
"The margin was slim, and he struggles significantly more when the circumstances shift. However, the realization that this is the third occasion [not reaching Q3] is particularly disheartening."
Perez appeared on track to advance to Q2, but his hopes were dashed at the last moment of Q1 when Alex Albon managed to enhance his performance in the Williams, knocking Perez out of the qualifying round.
Perez acknowledged his inability to make his tyres function properly and described his qualifying performance as a "complete catastrophe."
"Perez mentioned to F1TV that the primary problem was located at the back of the car, specifically with the rear axle, noting that it felt somewhat more problematic."
"I believe it was an unusual experience for many vehicles involved. For our part, we simply struggled to activate the tyre properly. It required significant time to truly engage the tyre."
"The entire experience was a complete catastrophe. I believe by the time we reached the final stage, I simply couldn't manage to complete a decent lap."
