Marc Marquez Secures Aragon MotoGP Win but Admits Championship Hopes are Slim
Marc Marquez's title hopes remain distant even after his Aragon MotoGP triumph.
Marc Marquez, an eight-time World Champion, clinched victory at the Aragon MotoGP, narrowing his gap in the championship standings to 70 points. Despite this achievement, he believes he remains too distant from being a serious title contender.
Beyond trailing Jorge Martin by 70 points, Marquez is also 47 points short of catching Francesco Bagnaia, who holds the most wins in 2024 with seven Grand Prix victories and three Sprint race triumphs.
During the press conference after the race in Aragon, Marquez confessed, "No, we're not close," when questioned about his chances for the championship. "We're continually losing points, and it's getting worse. We're too far behind."
"It's not just a single rider; there are actually two riders who are more consistent than we are."
"One weekend won't transform our lives. It will certainly be beneficial, but it won't be a game changer. We are too far behind to compete for the championship this year."
"However, let's aim to secure a spot in the top three. That seems like an achievable target. There are still many points up for grabs and numerous events that could unfold. Given the unpredictable weather conditions in Asia, with storms and rain, anything can happen."
"However, our continued enjoyment is crucial to me, and we will strive to persist and compete with the leading individuals."
Highlighting the importance of maintaining consistency to compete for the championship, Marquez mentioned the atypical circumstances of the Aragon round.
“This weekend was fantastic, the atmosphere was incredible,” he stated. “However, we must stay grounded as the conditions were quite unique. For me, the Red Bull Ring GP held more significance because I felt great and was very competitive, nearly matching the top performers.”
"The significance of this win is immense, and our next goal is to achieve consistency. It's important to grasp during the races, although I anticipate that there will be some weekends where we face more difficulties than others. Consistency will be crucial in those moments."
Marquez highlighted Enea Bastianini as an example, noting that despite being considered a strong championship contender following his double victory at the British Grand Prix, Bastianini finished only fifth in Aragon after starting from 14th position in the qualifiers.
Marquez expressed that while they aim to replicate their success in the future, achieving consistent performance is challenging. He noted that although Enea Bastianini showed speed at Silverstone, maintaining that level of performance regularly is their primary goal.
Jorge Martin, who is currently leading the championship by 23 points following the race in Aragon, partially concurred with Marquez.
"The championship leader mentioned that although Marc is currently not close in the standings, he could become a title contender if he consistently wins every race weekend."
"Just two races back, Enea Bastianini was competing for the championship. Although he temporarily fell out of contention, Marc is now emerging as a strong contender after impressive performances in Austria and here. Without a doubt, Marc is one of the top riders and can vie for the title."
