The eight-time world champion weighs in on the leading Moto3 contender's abilities
Gresini MotoGP competitor Marc Marquez describes Moto3 championship frontrunner David Alonso as "a sponge" after a recent practice session together with the Colombian racer.
In the closing days of the previous month, Marquez participated in a track event featuring sports motorcycles at Spain's Aspar circuit. He was in the company of Alex Marquez, Ivan Ortola, Jaume Masia, Red Bull Rookies Cup competitor Maximo Quiles, and Alonso.
The interaction took place after a short conversation between Marc Marquez and Alonso at the Red Bull Ring, earlier in the month of August.
When questioned regarding Alonso, Marquez commended the young athlete's skill in absorbing advice and showing clear progress because of it.
"Alonso absorbs everything," Marquez observed.
"He's a cyclist whom I've had the privilege of coaching alongside Maximo Quiles. Both individuals are incredibly young and gifted."
"Particularly when you talk to them at the start of the day, and by the day's close, they have surpassed you."
"Thus, this is genuinely pleasant."
"Particularly from both individuals, and even more so from David, they commit fully during training sessions. This stands out to me because throughout my career, I've experienced numerous setbacks, devoted countless hours to training, and achieved significant victories. Yet, I still require that youthful energy in those intense 35-degree workouts to push myself to the edge."
“They imparted that spirit unto me, and I found joy in it.”
In his sophomore year of grand prix competition, Alonso currently leads the Moto3 rankings, holding a 70-point advantage over Dani Holgado after completing 13 rounds of the 2024 season.
Recently, the Aspar team declared its decision to elevate Alonso to its Moto2 team for the 2025 season, taking over the spot from Jake Dixon who is moving to Marc VDS.
On Wednesday, it was officially announced by the team that Holgado will team up with Alonso in Moto2. Previously, both riders were part of the Aspar team in the Junior Moto3 World Championship, where Holgado clinched the championship title in 2021.
