Marc Marquez Ends Nearly Three-Year Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Victory
Marc Marquez admitted he "put pressure on himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He confessed, "During the Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I understood the significance of today."
Marc Marquez broke a winless streak that lasted nearly three years with a triumphant performance at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, calling the event "perfect."
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with an 0.8-second advantage, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session Marquez did not lead was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night through Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
“It was an ideal weekend,” Marquez stated during the press conference after the race. “We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where I chose with my team to remain in the garage.”
Marquez discussed the emotional tension he experienced during the nearly three-year period without a win, and the relief he felt as he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th premier class victory.
"In the race, we felt incredible right from the start," he mentioned. "It was an extremely lengthy race, and managing emotions during the final laps was challenging. However, when I crossed the finish line, it felt like I had shed 3-4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing weight on my back, winning this was unbelievable. Right away, I began reflecting on everything we went through, the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with significant support, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me the chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. Now, we set new goals and continue to push forward."
Marquez established a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various thoughts during the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he remarked. "But beyond the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful; it's always a celebration there."
"The key factor was the support from those around me. In challenging times, being surrounded by compassionate and empathetic individuals, who were even more affected by the situation than I was, truly made all the difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual. In previous races, the adrenaline had been much higher when celebrating second or third places. Today, it was more about emotion than adrenaline."
After leading in all sessions except for the wet Warm Up on Sunday morning, Marquez confessed that he was under some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he remarked. "Yesterday during the Sprint, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"Therefore, I made an effort to stay focused. If you have the speed, it seems like you can handle the situation well, maintain consistency, and act intelligently. However, without the speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
“Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to stay competitive with the leading competitors.”
Marquez views this victory on par with his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first triumph since suffering a broken arm during the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany."
"When you’re dealing with numerous injuries and tough times, the significance of your wins changes."
"Indeed, I have won 60 races, but those two wins, along with my first MotoGP victory, are the most significant. They boost your confidence in a unique way and provide an additional sense of assurance."
"I hadn't been feeling well for quite some time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding smoothly and effortlessly, but I was also very focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite the fact that this was Marquez's twelfth race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he believed winning was achievable ever since he initially rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the test in Valencia, Marquez understood that a race victory is on the horizon. He noted, "It was there that I saw we would get our chances. Competing for the championship is a different matter, and for that, we must continue to put in the effort."
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
