Marc Marquez Breaks Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Triumph: A Weekend of Pressure and Redemption
Marc Marquez admitted that he "put pressure on myself" to achieve a "perfect" performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. "During the Sprint, I couldn't enjoy it because I was aware of the significance of today," he said.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year winless streak last weekend at the Aragon MotoGP, a triumph he called "perfect."
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second lead, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session that Marc Marquez did not lead was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night through Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
“It was an ideal weekend,” Marquez mentioned during the post-race press briefing. “We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where I chose along with my team to remain in the garage.”
Marquez discussed the emotional journey he experienced during the nearly three-year period without a win, and the sense of relief he felt when he finally crossed the finish line to secure his 60th premier class victory.
"In the race, we had an incredible feeling right from the start," he mentioned. "The race was extremely long, and managing emotions in the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line made me feel like I had shed 3-4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back, winning this was an unbelievable achievement. Right away, I began reflecting on the entire journey we went through, thinking about everyone who supported me, including my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant support, with the Gresini team offering me the chance. I came in as a novice, aimed to give my all, and we achieved our goal. Now, we set new objectives and continue to push forward."
Marquez established a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various matters in the closing laps.
"In those final three laps, I was already envisioning myself on the podium," he remarked. "Beyond just the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always amusing and joyful; it's consistently a party with them."
"Additionally, the most significant factor was the people surrounding me. In extremely challenging times, being in a tough situation, without a genuinely compassionate team, truly kind individuals who were more affected by the situation than I was — that was what made the difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual since, in previous races, the excitement was greater even when securing second or third places. Today was more about feeling emotions rather than experiencing an adrenaline rush."
Marquez acknowledged that he experienced some pressure to finish his weekend on a high note with a win in the Grand Prix, despite leading in every session except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he remarked. "As you could see during yesterday's Sprint, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That's why I aimed to stay concentrated. If you have the speed, it seems like you can handle things well, stay consistent, and make smart decisions. But you're still the same person—without the speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to compete closely with the leading racers."
Having secured the win, Marquez places it on the same level as his 2021 German Grand Prix victory, which marked his comeback after suffering an arm injury at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez commented, "I consider it to be on par with the 2021 event in Germany."
"When you're dealing with numerous injuries and facing a challenging period, the importance of each win changes."
Indeed, I did secure 60 wins, yet those two triumphs, along with my initial MotoGP win, hold the greatest significance. They instill a unique kind of confidence, providing an additional boost of assurance.
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding along; it felt effortless and smooth, but I was especially focused on avoiding any errors."
Even though this marked Marquez's 12th race with the Gresini Ducati squad, he mentioned that he had believed a win was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez recognized that a race victory is on the horizon. He understood that opportunities to win will come, but emphasized that competing for the championship requires continued effort and dedication.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
