Marc Marquez Adapts Bagnaia’s Strategy to Secure Podium Finish at Catalunya MotoGP

Marc Marquez: “He managed his tyres better on Saturday, and when you're up against quick riders, you emulate them, simple as that.”
Marc Marquez delivered an astounding show at the Catalunya MotoGP, climbing from 14th place to secure a third-place finish.
Fending off Aleix Espargaro while facing challenges from his deteriorating soft rear tyre, Marquez managed to minimize the impact as his championship competitors, Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin, secured positions ahead of the Gresini competitor.
Marquez showcased remarkable speed during the race weekend, yet starting behind the Ducati duo of Bagnaia and Martin puts him at an initial disadvantage.
"Marquez mentioned, 'Being in your initial year with a bike presents its challenges, among other things.'"
"For each track, it's possible to review their performance from the previous year, but it varies based on your own riding technique."
"Whenever we begin and encounter issues, it invariably leads to delays. On Saturday morning, I experimented with a technique that significantly aided my progress towards matching the pace of the other Ducatis."
"That provided me with the speed, but now we must figure out how to execute the time attack and how to prevent the front-end from pushing."
This issue is associated with the 23 bike, but despite the setbacks experienced there, we see advantages in different areas.
"Securing a spot on the podium in Montmelo was crucial, given it's among the toughest tracks."
Marquez's comeback was notably more remarkable than his performance at Le Mans, especially after facing difficulties on Friday.
The analysis of Bagnaia's performance data from Saturday's sprint provided him with valuable insights, enabling him to leverage this information effectively for Sunday's grand prix.
When questioned about his choice to opt for the soft tire and his ability to maintain it throughout the race, Marquez responded, "I took a cue from Pecco's performance data from the day before [chuckles]. He managed his tires more efficiently on Saturday, and naturally, when you observe quick riders, you emulate them, and that’s all there is to it."
"Admittedly, my ability to navigate long right turns isn't the strongest, largely because I tend to lean into them significantly. This style became second nature to me over a decade with Honda, and altering it now proves to be a challenge."
"I'm making an effort, though it's pretty challenging to adapt. However, I do get a grasp of Jorge's and Pecco's riding techniques, and then attempt to emulate the best aspects of their styles.
"Certainly, they possess around four to five years of familiarity with this motorcycle, and [Bagnaia], being a double [MotoGP] world champion, rides flawlessly. Consequently, at each race circuit, I am gaining new insights."
Marquez's next challenge lies at Mugello, a track known for its complexities and challenges for him.
Yet, now that the eight-time world champion is riding the grid's top-performing motorcycle, striving for podium finishes and potentially victories seems achievable.
However, Marquez minimized his victory prospects after the race in Catalunya, saying, "Mugello isn't the ideal track for a win. I expect Pecco to excel there, especially on the long bends.
"That's one of his strengths. However, there's no worry, no rush. I'm content and having a good time.
"As we head into the latter half of the season, my aim is to be better equipped in handling my bike. However, it's evident that the competition, with their 24 bikes, will be tough to manage. Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to the challenge and it's genuinely enjoyable for me to compete against these two competitors."
