Lotus Eletre Electric SUV Hits U.S. Market at $229,900 Amid Tariff-Driven Price Surge
The electric SUV from Lotus, known as the Eletre and manufactured in China, is on track for its United States debut with deliveries expected to commence in early 2025. However, due to recent tariffs imposed by the U.S., the vehicle's price has significantly increased to $229,900.
On Thursday, Lotus announced that the starting price for the Eletre Carbon launch edition will be $229,900. This price point is essentially twice the amount initially declared, suggesting that Lotus is prepared to absorb most, if not all, of the extra 100% tariff imposed on electric vehicles manufactured in China. This decision appears to be driven by a strategy focused on enhancing the company's reputation or expanding its market presence in the United States.
Lotus Eletre Carbon Edition
Spanning a length of 201 inches, this vehicle surpasses the Range Rover in size and is merely 6 inches more compact than the Hummer EV SUV. Despite its size, it's priced higher than both. However, its agility is enhanced by the inclusion of four-wheel steering. Equipped with a typical all-wheel drive system powered by two motors, it boasts a formidable 905 horsepower and 727 pound-feet of torque. These specifications contribute to an anticipated acceleration from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.9 seconds and a maximum velocity of 165 mph, specifications which are quite common among contemporary, top-tier electric vehicles with a focus on high performance.
The Eletre distinguishes itself with its ability to support 350-kw DC rapid charging, boasting the capability to charge its sizable 112-kwh battery pack in just 20 minutes. Lotus has revealed compatible quick-charging technology capable of delivering up to 450 kw right to the plug—significantly surpassing the capacity of many electric vehicles. Although EPA range estimates have not been released, Lotus predicts a range of 254-280 miles based on the European WLTP assessment procedure.
Lotus Eletre made with carbon materials
Lotus, the provider of the Elise model used for the foundational Tesla Roadster, where Tesla developed the battery and propulsion technology among other things, has been developing a fresh battery-packaging framework. This innovation is intended to serve as the foundation for a more compact and lightweight sports car planned for release later in this decade.
The upcoming Lotus Emeya four-door car will come after the Eletre, and it's expected to compete with the likes of the Porsche Taycan, Lucid Air Sapphire, Tesla Model S Plaid, among others. However, with the recent adjustment in pricing, it might turn out to be quite a scarce model.
