Jorge Martin Weighs In on Pecco Bagnaia-Alex Marquez Collision at Aragon MotoGP: Impact on Championship Race
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin's hopes for the championship grew stronger at the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia suffered a crash.
Martin came to Aragon five points behind Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
While Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, Martin continued his streak by securing second place in both races. This marks the sixth consecutive race since the summer break where Martin has finished in second place.
Bagnaia's weekend came to a dramatic conclusion due to a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Having started poorly, Bagnaia made his way up the ranks and caught up to Marquez's rear tire with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12, and as Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, the two collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was evidently hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You ought to ask Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
“Certainly, it was hard to see clearly due to the dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn’t lean further, similar to what happened to Joe Roberts in Moto2, where he crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was contact.”
"I really hope they’re alright, as it looked like they were near the bikes after the accident. I’m wishing they’ll be in good shape for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center, where scans confirmed that there were no fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming event in the MotoGP World Championship, the San Marino Grand Prix, is scheduled for this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury sustained from a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year, he will only have a week to recover after the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
While Bagnaia has secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who triumphed in both races in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider heads into his competitor's home event with a 23-point advantage in the championship.
