Jorge Martin Weighs In on Controversial Bagnaia-Marquez Clash at Aragon MotoGP, Eyes Championship Lead Heading into Misano
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship contender Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's chances of winning the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, as he maintained his impressive performance, while Francesco Bagnaia suffered a crash.
Martin came to Aragon just five points behind Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin continued his streak of finishing in second place in every race since the summer break, securing two more second-place finishes this weekend.
Bagnaia's eventful weekend culminated in a late-race collision involving Alex Marquez. Despite a sluggish start, Bagnaia was making his way up the ranks and caught up to Marquez's back tire with seven laps remaining.
On the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at the 12th turn. As Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on the situation, the two riders collided and crashed at turn 13.
Martin shared his perspective on the incident during the press conference that took place after the race, though it was evident that he was hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
"It’s tough," Martin mentioned. "You ought to inquire with Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez."
"Undoubtedly, visibility was challenging due to the significant amount of dust in that area. I believe that Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2, where Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate, Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, this resulted in a collision."
"I really hope they're alright. After the accident, they appeared to be near the bikes, so I'm wishing they're in good shape for the upcoming race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical facility where scans revealed that no bones were fractured. However, the Italian rider mentioned that he was experiencing discomfort in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, will take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Last year, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury sustained from a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix, and similarly, this year he has just one week to recover after the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having claimed victory twice in the MotoGP class at Misano, it was Martin who secured wins in both races in 2023. This year, the Spaniard heads to his competitor’s home event with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
