Jorge Martin Downplays Past Success at Misano Ahead of Tight 2024 San Marino GP Showdown
Jorge Martin highlights main rivals at Misano, dismissing previous year's triumph
Despite his 2023 success at Misano, Jorge Martin states it's "irrelevant now"
Jorge Martin, the front-runner in the MotoGP championship, has stated that his impressive performance at the 2023 Misano round is irrelevant as he prepares for the upcoming San Marino Grand Prix.
Martin clinched victories in both the sprint and the grand prix at Misano last season, showcasing a commanding performance for Ducati that significantly propelled his championship aspirations.
After securing a 23-point advantage against Francesco Bagnaia in the Aragon race the previous weekend, his performance in Misano during 2023 positions him as a top contender for winning the 2024 San Marino Grand Prix.
However, Martin feels that his past performance at Misano, despite being a year old, holds no significance in the ongoing championship race.
"Definitely, it feels great to be back in Misano following the outcome of last season," he mentioned on Thursday at the location in Italy.
"However, my accomplishments from the previous season hold no significance at this point."
"The crucial aspect now is to continue enhancing our skills and acquiring new knowledge, especially since the competition has significantly intensified in the recent races."
"I sense that I'm improving and continuously advancing, yet the same can be said for my peers."
"Indeed, it's challenging. I believe that here in Italy, for Pecco and Enea, it's going to be an excellent weekend. They spend a lot of time training here, so the track should favor them."
"Similarly for us, though achieving dominance will be challenging. Our goal is to replicate my previous season's success, which will be incredibly difficult, but I am committed to putting in my utmost effort."
Martin emphasized that a crucial component of his successful weekend at Misano the previous year was due to his main competitors for the title, Bagnaia and Marco Bezzecchi, being sidelined due to injuries.
Bastianini keeps 2024 championship contention open
Enea Bastianini has consistently secured a spot on the podium in every Misano race he has participated in since advancing to MotoGP.
Despite being sidelined due to an injury for last year's San Marino GP, the factory Ducati rider is anticipated to play a significant role in the fight for victory.
Following a challenging weekend at Aragon, Bastianini finds himself trailing Martin by 71 points in the championship standings. However, he remains optimistic, feeling that with improved consistency, he's still in contention for the title.
"He mentioned that Pecco and Jorge have maintained consistency throughout the season from the beginning."
"At times, I achieve impressive outcomes, but at other times, I don't."
"My performance in the upcoming championship hinges on whether I can maintain consistency throughout."
"However, we're facing a significant deficit of 71 points at the moment, but it's important never to lose hope. There are still numerous races ahead of us, so let's wait and see what happens."
