Jorge Martin Declares Himself the Premier MotoGP Rider of 2024: A Deep Dive into His Bold Claim and Championship Journey
Jorge Martin Claims Top Spot in MotoGP, Backed by Statistics
Leading the Championship, Martin Believes He's the Premier Rider of the 2024 Season
MotoGP frontrunner Jorge Martin considers himself the top rider at the moment, yet acknowledges the need for refinement in his approach.
Last season, Martin took second place in the championship, coming in behind Francesco Bagnaia, and has been at the forefront of the 2024 points race for the majority of this season.
Following a calamitous race at the San Marino Grand Prix, his advantage was significantly reduced from 26 points to just seven. This was due to a risky strategy in unpredictable weather conditions, which resulted in him falling a lap behind, finishing in 15th place.
During a conversation with DAZN before the recent Misano race, Martin shared his thoughts on who he believes is the top racer in the current lineup.
"Martin started by saying, "It's quite challenging."
"What does it mean to be the top cyclist? It's quite unclear, quite challenging."
"It's apparent that the top tier consists of us four in the competition – the Ducati quartet, Pecco [Bagnaia], Marc [Marquez], Enea [Bastianini], and myself are noticeably ahead of others."
"Currently, it might come off as conceited, but I believe I'm the top cyclist around."
"I need to refine and enhance my skills continually; it's an ongoing process for me. If I halt this improvement, I risk dropping from the top position to the eighth in just six months."
"However, I believe I hold the top speed, and the statistics back me up; it's not merely my own claim."
This season, Martin leads the pack with the highest number of pole positions, having secured five, compared to Bagnaia's two, Bastianini's one, Maverick Vinales' one, Aleix Espargaro's two, and Marc Marquez's two.
He leads in sprint victories with a total of four, narrowly outpacing his closest competitor for the championship, Bagnaia, by just one win after 13 rounds into the 2024 season.
In terms of Grand Prix wins, Martin has achieved just two compared to Bagnaia's seven. Meanwhile, Marc Marquez has equaled the Pramac racer's count after securing a win at the San Marino GP.
Martin has maintained the majority of his lead in the championship due to his consistent performance, with only three instances in 2024 where he did not earn any points.
During the same interview with DAZN, Martin expressed feeling embarrassed when Ducati reversed their initial decision to elevate him to the factory team, choosing Marquez instead.
In 2025, Martin is set to become a part of the Aprilia racing team, teaming up with Marco Bezzecchi, as Pramac Racing moves away from Ducati to align with Yamaha.
