Jack Doohan Steps Up for Alpine in Canadian GP FP1 Amidst Ocon Replacement Speculations
Jack Doohan is set to fill in for Esteban Ocon at Alpine during the first practice session of the Canadian Grand Prix.
Jack Doohan is set to make an impression on Alpine as he participates in the first practice session at the F1 Canadian Grand Prix.
Alpine's junior and backup racer, Doohan, is set to take over Esteban Ocon's spot during the initial 60-minute practice session at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Friday, making it his debut FP1 appearance of the 2024 season.
The 21-year-old from Australia, offspring of the iconic motorcyclist Mick, is in the running for a permanent position with Alpine for the upcoming season.
Following Alpine's announcement that Ocon will leave the team when his contract ends this year, a seat will open up next to Pierre Gasly, who is anticipated to remain with the French outfit.
Doohan, securing the third spot in the previous year's Formula 2 standings, has taken the wheel for Alpine in four FP1 sessions, with his latest outing at the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
"I'm truly thrilled to hit the track in Montréal for the first practice," expressed Doohan. "This will be my debut drive at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, and I'm eagerly anticipating it."
"I want to express my appreciation to the team for giving me the chance to spend additional time on the track and to start getting accustomed to the 2024 equipment right at the beginning of the season. This experience will also enhance my performance in the simulator work, especially during the European races."
"I'll concentrate on optimizing the performance for the team and fully utilizing the session for both drivers, examining specific test components and getting to grips with the updated track surface."
Alpine's team leader, Bruno Famin, has acknowledged that Doohan along with the team's young racer, Victor Martins, are excellent choices for the squad's driver roster in 2025.
"Famin emphasized the team's approach to proceed cautiously, highlighting the exceptional talent of their academy drivers, specifically Jack and Victor, and mentioned that there is no pressure."
"I believe our primary goal should be to enhance and grow our team; that's the top priority."
