Helmut Marko Sounds Alarm on Red Bull’s Strategy: Warns Verstappen Can’t Sustain Season-Long Limit Push
Helmut Marko cautions that Max Verstappen cannot spend the entire season pushing to the maximum. He expresses worry that Red Bull's strategy of depending on Verstappen's exceptional talent is not sustainable.
Red Bull F1 consultant Helmut Marko cautioned that Max Verstappen “cannot sustain peak performance throughout the entire season,” after his recent victory at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Verstappen secured his seventh win in the 2024 F1 season in a remarkable manner, successfully holding back McLaren's Lando Norris.
Despite McLaren seemingly having the faster vehicle during the race, it was Verstappen who ultimately secured the win.
Throughout this season, McLaren consistently demonstrated superior speed, notably in Miami and Canada, yet it was Verstappen who ended up claiming victory.
Nonetheless, Marko has voiced worries that Red Bull's dependency on Verstappen's exceptional performance this season is not sustainable, especially given McLaren's impressive performance.
In an interview with Austrian media outlet OE24, Marko commented, “Even Max can't push to the limit throughout an entire season. The move he made to take the lead was remarkable, even by his standards.
"Max's success stems from his strong self-assurance, rather than the superior quality of his vehicle."
In the other half of the Red Bull team's area, Sergio Perez experienced a challenging weekend.
Perez edged out Alpine driver Pierre Gasley to secure the eighth position in Barcelona.
Evaluating Perez's form, Marko acknowledged that the current competitive environment in F1 is complicating matters.
"He commenced from a significantly rear position," he continued. "However, it's accurate. Given the tight competition now, vulnerabilities are something you can't tolerate."
Despite facing challenges over the weekend, Red Bull managed to increase their advantage in the drivers' championship standings.
Consequently, Marko is pleased with Mercedes' enhanced performance since it enables them to score points against Ferrari and McLaren, who are Red Bull's primary competitors this season.
"He explained that if Mercedes is present at this time, it will be beneficial for us and align with our projections for the world championship."
