Hamilton’s Hot Seat: Mercedes Star Compares Overheating F1 Car to Sauna Ordeal at Italian GP
Lewis Hamilton compares driving the overheated Mercedes F1 vehicle to "experiencing a sauna without wearing any shorts"
"It was extremely hot. Similar to being in a sauna without shorts, kind of painful."
Lewis Hamilton has highlighted the problems with overheating that both he and his Mercedes F1 colleague George Russell experienced during practice at the Italian Grand Prix.
Temperatures soared above 30 degrees, making it scorching hot at Monza.
This posed challenges for the racers, especially the pair from Mercedes.
Hamilton expressed discomfort over the excessive heat of his cockpit seat, yet this didn't hinder him from clocking the quickest lap during the second practice session at Monza.
After the session, Hamilton commented on the extreme heat, humorously likening it to being in a sauna.
"He mentioned, "The heat inside our car was unbearable. I'm not entirely certain of the reason, but near the radiator, there might have been some hot air escaping."
"The temperature was extremely high. Comparable to being in a steam room without wearing any shorts, causing discomfort."
Hamilton felt optimistic about the speed of the Mercedes W15, noting it as a positive day with the car's performance "improving as the day went on."
"He mentioned, "The day has gone well. Overall, I've felt quite positive. Clearly, the asphalt is fresh, which has introduced some challenges, especially with all the new curbs. Right from the beginning, the car has been performing well.
"During the initial practice session, P1, there was significant tyre graining, which posed challenges for many, ourselves included. However, after making several adjustments during the interval, the car's performance improved noticeably in the following session. Despite this progress, there are still a few aspects that require further attention and improvement."
The seven-time world champion cautioned Mercedes against making major changes to the car's configuration following a promising Friday.
"He expressed a positive state of mind, emphasizing the significance of the tasks ahead for the evening and the necessary preparations back in the simulator."
"We must proceed with caution during the setup to avoid overly disrupting the car's arrangement as we have in the past."
