Fernando Alonso Addresses Aston Martin’s Challenges and Rumors of Adrian Newey’s Arrival Amid Ongoing Struggles
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about an Adrian Newey reveal happening this week
"I don't like to make excuses," states Fernando Alonso amid Aston Martin's challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just “one person,” amid ongoing rumors of Adrian Newey's involvement.
Insiders at the Monza circuit during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal Newey's recruitment in the coming days.
Newey, who has been serving as the chief technology officer for Red Bull, is set to leave his position at the beginning of the next year, at which point he will have the opportunity to join another Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin becoming his future team has intensified recently, while rumors about a potential move to Ferrari have faded.
"Currently, it's all speculation, and in my view, it's not a task for just one person to handle," Alonso remarked while at Monza.
"Our focus is on our current assets and output. We aim to discern which efforts are advancing us forward, which are setting us back, and how we can better shape our strategy for 2025."
Newey's open schedule in the upcoming year could enable him to lead the development of the 2026 vehicle for a different company, possibly providing them with a crucial edge as the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has made a significant investment in a new facility at Silverstone and has secured a contract extension for Alonso through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine tailored to the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have generally been quite dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso crossed the finish line in 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll came in 19th.
2025 could serve as a preparatory period for Aston Martin before they fully commit to their ambitions in 2026.
"There's no action we can take," Alonso responded. "Essentially, we're at the mercy of our team, and both Lance and I are striving to perform at our peak each weekend."
"During an inspired weekend, much like this one I'm experiencing, I'm certain it will remain entirely anonymous."
This year, Lance and I have consistently been neck and neck, finishing races within a mere two or three seconds of each other, either ahead or trailing behind. This weekend turned out to be an instance where I had a slight edge, feeling quite satisfied with the car's performance and pushing it to what felt like beyond its maximum potential, ultimately securing the 11th position.
"Indeed, feeling let down. It's crucial to maintain patience. Our focus should be on the primary goal set for 2026."
"However, concurrently, I believe that as a collective, we might come to terms with not contending for a top four position. Those are elite teams, significantly ahead of us."
"However, currently trailing behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull, it's clear we need to elevate our standards. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso mentioned regarding the vehicle for the upcoming year: "I believe there's still an opportunity for us to make adjustments.
"McLaren advanced from the back of the pack to a podium position in just four months, providing us with distinct instances.
"Furthermore, Mercedes began on equal footing with us. For the initial four races, we were on par with Mercedes, and they've already clinched three victories this year. Hence, I don't entertain excuses."
However, it's improbable that Aston Martin will see enhancements in the upcoming races.
"Alonso expressed frustration, stating, 'Until there's an improvement to the vehicle, this current situation will persist, and it's simply not satisfactory.'"
"Performance fell short in Monza. It was lacking in Zandvoort, in Spa, and in Hungary as well.
"Hence, I believe significant alterations in Baku, Singapore, or Austin are unlikely without the introduction of new components."
"The strategy is set. Everyone on the team is informed about what's happening. We're all giving it our all. Indeed, we're staying together, continuously striving. The previous weekend we secured a single point. This time, we nearly achieved two points, and that's the challenge we're facing."
