Fabio di Giannantonio Faces 80% Risk of Shoulder Dislocations as He Battles Through 2024 MotoGP Season
Fabio di Giannantonio: High chance of suffering further shoulder dislocations
Fabio di Giannantonio: “Regardless of the type of crash, there’s an 80% probability that my shoulder will dislocate again. Another dislocation is highly possible.”
Fabio di Giannantonio will compete throughout the rest of the 2024 MotoGP season, knowing there is an "80%" likelihood that he could experience further shoulder dislocations.
"We'll keep an eye on this shoulder through the rest of the season and then determine if surgery is necessary," he stated.
The VR46 team rider suffered a dislocated left shoulder during a practice session on Friday at the Red Bull Ring. This injury, combined with an earlier right collarbone injury sustained at the Sachsenring, has forced him to withdraw from the Austrian event.
Making a comeback at Aragon last weekend, di Giannantonio caught attention by finishing ahead of his team-mate Marco Bezzecchi, securing seventh place in the grand prix. However, due to a penalty for tyre pressure, his position was adjusted to eighth.
The Italian racer believes he's only at 60% physical fitness for this weekend's first Misano round, having had only a few days to rest.
Di Giannantonio expressed his delight over the weekend in Aragon, noting that he hadn't expected such a performance. Despite starting from a lower position and having to overtake many competitors, he described the race as truly excellent.
"Right now, we're focusing on controlling the pain because I'm still healing from the injury to my right collarbone that happened at the Sachsenring, and I've also got to recover from an issue with my left shoulder after Austria."
"Right now, my body is somewhat at its limit, but I'm not concerned about my speed. I feel really comfortable with the bike."
Ranked ninth in the world championship and as the second-best GP23 rider behind Marc Marquez, di Giannantonio has disclosed that he continues to deal with the threat of additional dislocations.
"Right now, I feel I'm at about 60% physically, and honestly, I believe recovery will take quite a while," he mentioned. "The shoulder is a particularly crucial area to sustain an injury. So, it's not in the best condition. Additionally, participating in two consecutive races isn't ideal."
The rider expressed that for the second Misano event, he anticipates being around 80% fit. However, he acknowledged that any future crashes, whether this season or in the long term, carry an 80% risk of his shoulder dislocating again.
"Currently, the situation is quite serious, and we need to find a way to address this issue."
"We'll keep an eye on this shoulder for the rest of the season. After that, we'll determine if surgery or another treatment is necessary."
Di Giannantonio is set to stay with VR46 for the upcoming season and will be upgraded to factory-spec equipment under a new agreement directly with Ducati.
