Fabio di Giannantonio Faces 80% Risk of Shoulder Dislocations Amidst Impressive MotoGP Return
Fabio di Giannantonio: High Probability of Further Shoulder Dislocations
Fabio di Giannantonio mentioned, “No matter how I crash, there’s an 80% likelihood that my shoulder could dislocate again. I might experience another dislocation.”
Fabio di Giannantonio will continue to compete in the 2024 MotoGP season, despite knowing there is an 80% probability that he may experience further shoulder dislocations.
He mentioned that they would keep an eye on his shoulder until the season concludes, and then determine if surgery is necessary.
The VR46 team rider suffered a dislocated left shoulder during a practice session on Friday at the Red Bull Ring, which aggravated a prior right collarbone injury from the Sachsenring and forced him to miss the Austrian race.
Last weekend at Aragon, di Giannantonio made a strong comeback by outpacing his team-mate Marco Bezzecchi to secure seventh place in the grand prix. However, he was later demoted to eighth due to a penalty for tyre pressure.
Having had only a short period to recover, the Italian believes he is at just 60% of his optimal physical condition for the upcoming first round at Misano this weekend.
Di Giannantonio expressed his delight with the weekend at Aragon, stating that he never envisioned performing so well prior to arriving. "I began the race from a rather distant position," he explained, "but despite needing to overtake many competitors, it turned out to be a genuinely impressive race."
"Currently, we're focusing on pain management since I still need to heal my right collarbone from the Sachsenring incident and my left shoulder after the Austria event."
"Right now, my body is somewhat at its limit, but I have no concerns about my speed. I feel very comfortable with the bike."
Ranked ninth in the world championship and being the second-highest GP23 rider following Marc Marquez, di Giannantonio disclosed that he continues to be at risk for additional dislocations.
"Right now, I feel like I'm at 60% physically, and to be honest, I believe it will take a considerable amount of time to recover,” he mentioned. “The shoulder is a particularly sensitive area to hurt, so it's quite challenging. Additionally, having to compete in two consecutive races isn't ideal."
"In my opinion, by the time we get to Misano 2, I hope to be operating at around 80% of my full capacity. However, it's also a fact that from now until the end of the season—or really, indefinitely—there's about an 80% chance that any fall I take could result in my shoulder dislocating again."
"Currently, the situation is quite serious, and we need to find a solution to this issue."
"We'll keep an eye on this shoulder from now until the season concludes. After that, we'll determine if surgery or another treatment is necessary."
Di Giannantonio is set to stay with VR46 for the next season and will be upgraded to factory-spec equipment under a new agreement directly with Ducati.
