China carried out the execution of a scientist accused of espionage in 2016, as highlighted in a documentary that uncovers ten startling cases.
The report mentions that in late 2020, an unidentified Chinese IT firm secured a business deal to gather electronic signal data across China’s extensive railway systems. This contract was with an international company, which previously specialized in market research prior to offering technical support services in the Chinese rail sector.
The ministry reported that due to Covid restrictions in Beijing, the international firm was unable to deploy its staff to China and consequently subcontracted the tasks to local Chinese vendors. It was also discovered that this foreign company served a wide array of clients, comprising foreign intelligence services, defense and military divisions, as well as government agencies.
The report indicated that the Chinese firm was conscious of the potential hidden agendas of the overseas company. Nevertheless, lured by the promise of a profitable deal, it proceeded to purchase and set up the equipment in line with the stipulations of the foreign contract. Furthermore, it gathered data at predetermined sites and carried out both stationary and mobile testing and data collection across various cities and along high-speed railway routes as dictated by the international client.
The department reported that in the span of a month, the initiative amassed 500 gigabytes of data, which encompassed information from Internet of Things signals, mobile and railway communications, as well as secure networks.
