China carried out the execution of a scientist accused of espionage in 2016, as highlighted in a documentary that uncovered ten startling cases.
A report indicates that in late 2020, an anonymous Chinese IT firm secured a business agreement to gather electronic signal information across China's extensive railway systems. This contract was awarded by an overseas company, which had previously conducted market research prior to its entry into the Chinese railway sector to offer technical support services.
The ministry reported that due to Covid restrictions in Beijing, the overseas firm was unable to deploy its staff to China and consequently subcontracted the tasks to local Chinese suppliers. It was also revealed that the company serves a wide array of clients, among them international intelligence bodies, military and defense units, as well as government agencies.
The report indicated that the Chinese firm knew the international company could have hidden agendas, yet, lured by a profitable agreement, it proceeded to purchase and set up equipment as stipulated in the foreign contract. It also gathered data at designated sites and carried out mobile testing and data collection in various cities and along high-speed railway lines as directed by the international client.
The department announced that the initiative gathered 500 gigabytes of data over a one-month period, encompassing information from Internet of Things signals, mobile and railway communications, and secure networks.
