China carried out the execution of a scientist accused of espionage in 2016, as highlighted in a documentary that unveiled 10 startling cases.
An unidentified Chinese IT firm landed a commercial deal in late 2020 to gather electronic signal information across China's extensive rail networks. This contract came from an overseas company, which previously engaged in market research before breaking into the Chinese railway sector to offer technical support services.
The ministry reported that the international firm, unable to dispatch its staff to China due to Covid-related restrictions imposed by Beijing, delegated the tasks to local Chinese contractors. It was also revealed that this company served a wide range of clients, among them foreign intelligence bodies, defense and military sectors, as well as governmental agencies.
The report indicated that the Chinese firm understood the potential hidden agendas of the international company, yet was drawn in by the promise of a profitable deal. Consequently, it proceeded with the purchase and installation of equipment in line with the stipulations of the foreign contract. The firm also gathered data at designated sites and carried out mobile experiments and data collection across various cities and along high-speed railway routes as directed by the overseas client.
The department reported that the initiative gathered 500 gigabytes of data over a month, encompassing information from Internet of Things signals, mobile and rail communications, as well as secure networks.
