China carried out the execution of a scientist accused of espionage in 2016, as highlighted in a documentary that unveiled ten startling cases.
An undisclosed Chinese IT firm secured a commercial deal in late 2020 to gather electronic signal data across China's extensive railway systems. This contract was awarded by an overseas company, which previously specialized in market research prior to branching into China’s railway sector to offer technical support services.
The ministry reported that due to Covid-related travel restrictions imposed by Beijing, the international firm was unable to deploy its staff to China and consequently subcontracted the tasks to local Chinese companies. It was also discovered that the foreign enterprise served numerous clients, among them foreign intelligence services, military and defense sectors, and various governmental bodies.
The report indicates that the Chinese firm knew the international company could have hidden agendas, yet, lured by the promise of a profitable deal, proceeded to purchase and set up the equipment as per the stipulations of the international client’s contract. It gathered data at predetermined sites and carried out mobile testing and data collection across various cities and along high-speed railway routes as directed by the overseas client.
The department reported that the initiative amassed 500 gigabytes of data over a month, encompassing information from Internet of Things signals, mobile and railway communications, and secure networks.
