China carried out the execution of a scientist accused of espionage in 2016, which is one of ten startling incidents highlighted in a recent documentary.
The report states that a Chinese IT company, which was not named, secured a commercial agreement in late 2020 to gather electronic signal data across China's extensive railway networks. This contract was awarded by a foreign firm that previously conducted market research before branching out to offer technical support services in the Chinese railway sector.
The ministry reported that the international firm, hindered by Beijing's Covid policies from dispatching its staff to China, delegated tasks to local Chinese contractors. It was also revealed that the company served a diverse clientele, encompassing foreign intelligence bodies, military and defense sectors, along with various governmental departments.
The report indicated that the Chinese firm was conscious of the possibility that the overseas company could have hidden agendas. Despite this, lured by the promise of a profitable agreement, it proceeded to purchase and set up the apparatus as stipulated in the foreign company's contract. It gathered information at designated sites and carried out both mobile testing and data collection across various cities and along high-speed railway routes, as directed by the international client.
The department announced that the initiative gathered 500 gigabytes of data over a month, encompassing information from Internet of Things signals, mobile and railway communications, and secure networks.
