Eddie Jordan Advises Lando Norris on Championship Worthiness Following Monza Maneuver by Piastri
Lando Norris Advised to Master Subtle Skills to Emerge as a Deserving World Champion
"It's been pointed out that mastering these nuances is crucial for Lando to emerge as a deserving world champion."
Famed Formula 1 team boss Eddie Jordan has advised Lando Norris to grasp the nuances following an incident where he was outmaneuvered by McLaren co-driver Oscar Piastri during the first lap at Monza.
Starting at the front of the grid once more, Norris was overtaken at Turn 4 during the first lap of the Italian Grand Prix.
Piastri executed a bold maneuver by overtaking his teammate on the outside as they approached Turn 4.
The decision sparked extensive debate regarding McLaren's strategies, particularly in light of the "papaya tactics" radio communications.
In the most recent episode of the Formula for Success podcast, Jordan praised Piastri for his move on the first lap.
He implied that for Norris to achieve world champion status, he must take lessons from Piastri.
"Oscar executed flawlessly, shifting to the left and preventing Ferrari or any other competitor from overtaking," Jordan clarified. "I believe the team overlooked the second curve [Turn 4]. For me, Oscar's maneuver was truly exceptional because it caught everyone by surprise. That's what set it apart.
"It was incredibly precise, calm, and neat. He succeeded. We've mentioned before that for Lando to prove himself as a deserving world champion, he needs to pick up on these nuances. He's previously faced Max, gained experience, and his current pace is astonishing. He took away lessons from Monza."
"He'll forever recall Monza as the place where his teammate cleverly outmaneuvered him. To me, Oscar was simply remarkable."
Podcast co-host and ex-Formula 1 racer David Coulthard commented, “I concur. Passing on the outside is essentially a single-direction route.
"Accomplishing that task right at the start of the race was a clear demonstration of dedication and was of a global standard; it certainly wasn't an easy feat."
McLaren trails Red Bull by a mere eight points in the 2024 Formula 1 constructors' standings after the Italian Grand Prix.
Regarding the drivers' standings, Norris closed the gap on Max Verstappen's lead to 62 points with eight races remaining following the Monza event.
