China carried out the execution of a scientist in 2016 for espionage, as highlighted in a documentary that unveiled ten 'astonishing' instances.
The report mentioned that in late 2020, an anonymous Chinese IT firm secured a business agreement to gather electronic signal data across China's extensive railway system. This contract was with an overseas company that previously specialized in market research before branching into the Chinese rail sector to offer technical support services.
The ministry reported that due to Beijing's Covid restrictions, the international firm was unable to dispatch its staff to China and consequently delegated the tasks to local Chinese contractors. It was also disclosed that the company served a diverse clientele, encompassing foreign intelligence services, defense and military entities, and various governmental agencies.
The report indicated that the Chinese firm knew the international company could have hidden agendas, yet, lured by an attractive deal, it proceeded to purchase and set up the equipment as stipulated in the contract from the overseas partner. It gathered data at designated sites and carried out mobile tests and data collection across various cities and along high-speed railway routes as directed by the international client.
The department reported that the initiative amassed 500 gigabytes of data over the course of a month, capturing information from Internet of Things signals, mobile and train communications, as well as secure networks.
