Carlos Sainz’s Bold Leap: From Ferrari’s Podiums to Williams’ Revival Project
Williams discusses concerns about Carlos Sainz transitioning from the front to the back of the grid
"Are you worried that it might be a tough adjustment for Carlos?"
In 2025, Carlos Sainz is set to move from the team currently holding the second spot in the constructors' standings to the one ranked ninth.
Securing the commitment of the departing Ferrari driver to join them next season represents a significant triumph for Williams.
His dedication to their extended endeavor could result in sacrificing grand prix victories that he has grown familiar with over the shorter period.
On the F1 Nation podcast, host Tom Clarkson discussed those concerns with James Vowles, the team principal of Williams.
Clarkson inquired, "Are you worried about Carlos facing challenges as he makes the switch? Given he has already secured a victory with Ferrari, there’s a possibility he could clinch another win before the year ends.
"He's transitioning from a victorious Ferrari racer to a squad that's lagging behind."
"Is it challenging for a driver to comprehend that?"
Former Mercedes boss Vowles acknowledged, "That explains the lengthy decision-making process. Indeed."
"However, I view it as similar to the path I've followed."
"I moved from the leading position to the last one. It was a deliberate choice to make that shift.
"However, the satisfaction gained from advancing the team surpasses the occasional victory."
"That's what I believe is on Carlos' mind."
"He's aware of what he's gotten himself into. He's not naive."
Sainz has been in talks with Williams since the end of last year, ultimately choosing them over Sauber and Alpine.
Vowles mentioned, "I was introduced to his family for the first time in Abu Dhabi in 2023, when he had inked a deal with Ferrari."
"I had delved into this depth of detail for only one driver before, and that was Carlos.
"This doesn't imply that I wasn't engaging with other drivers. Indeed, I was. However, those interactions were relatively minor compared to my conversation with Carlos.
"In 2023, the approach was 'this is my identity, my principles, and the reason behind my faith in this endeavor, I urge you to give it thoughtful consideration'."
For a long time, Vowles has held Sainz in high esteem.
"He was already on my radar," he mentioned. "Carlos has outperformed Lando, Charles, and occasionally Max.
"I recall Toro Rosso considering 'Max is fast, but let's not overlook the other guy'.
The beginning was there. Once he found the correct mental space – during his second season with McLaren, the way his performance improved…
"When he's in his groove, he's incredibly fast! At that point, we hadn't realized just how fast Lando could be. However, I was aware of George's speed; it's all connected."
At last, Williams has secured their desired candidate.
Sainz has committed to joining forces with Alex Albon for a minimum of the next two seasons.
