Bagnaia Extends Apology to Alex Marquez for Harsh Words Post-Aragon Clash, Admits to Not Being at Full Fitness Ahead of San Marino GP
Pecco Bagnaia expresses regret: "Apologies to Alex Marquez for the harsh language"
"I never meant to imply that he intentionally caused my crash"
Francesco Bagnaia has issued a public apology to Alex Marquez, retracting his accusation that the Gresini rider intentionally collided with him during the Aragon MotoGP race.
During the 18th lap out of 23 in the previous Sunday's Aragon race, Bagnaia and the junior Marquez sibling made contact at Turn 13 as they competed for the third position.
The incident was classified as a racing accident by the officials, yet each rider pointed fingers at the other for the crash.
Bagnaia claims Marquez intentionally collided with him, asserting that the data from his motorcycle supports this accusation.
Marquez dismissed these claims on social media, and both competitors resolved their differences in a private conversation on Sunday night in Aragon.
On Thursday, before the San Marino GP taking place this weekend, Bagnaia expressed regret for his previous claims against Marquez, yet he continues to hold the belief that the Gresini racer was responsible.
"Bagnaia expressed his apologies to Alex, regretting the harsh language he used during post-race interviews."
"I was extremely upset about the incident, and reviewing the telemetry data only added to my frustration from my perspective."
"However, looking back, I realize I might have been overly harsh in my choice of words. My intention wasn't to accuse him of deliberately causing the crash."
His defense strategy appeared somewhat combative, which is often the case when vying for top spots.
"My perspective on the event remains unchanged as I adhere to my own reasoning. However, reflecting on my comments directed at him, I acknowledge they were excessive, and I extend my apologies to Alex."
"Occasionally, [frustration] can lead you to utter words without giving them much thought. That’s how I see it.
He visited our office just to apologize for the incident and nothing else. As two cyclists, we each have our own perspectives.
"It's considerate, yet undoubtedly, it's the right drive at the wrong time."
Bagnaia faced significant consequences from the incident, finding himself 23 points behind Jorge Martin in the championship standings after leaving Aragon.
Update on Bagnaia's Physical Condition
Following the mishap, both competitors emerged relatively unscathed, however, Bagnaia acknowledges that he hasn't fully recovered physically and is not in optimal shape as he heads to Misano for the initial race of the two scheduled there this month.
"He also mentioned, 'Physically, I am not operating at my full capacity.'"
"I'm experiencing significant discomfort in my shoulder, above the collarbone, and in the neck area. Nonetheless, we'll make every effort to prepare."
"Racing at my home grand prix is an incredible experience, especially with the support of the local fans cheering me on."
"I cover a distance of a million kilometers annually in this place to ensure I'm prepared for anything."
Elaborating on the constraints of his physical condition, Bagnaia expressed, "I sense a restriction in moving my body according to my wishes.
"However, that's to be expected. The force was significant with 170kg bearing down on me. Moreover, the crash onto the gravel was notably severe."
"Fortunately, I didn't suffer any fractures, but my muscles and ligaments are quite strained."
