Aston Martin Bolsters F1 Ambitions with Key Signing of Ex-Mercedes Engine Maestro Andy Cowell
Aston Martin bolsters its F1 squad with the acquisition of former Mercedes engine expert Andy Cowell, marking another significant addition to their expanding team.
Aston Martin has appointed Andy Cowell, previously an esteemed engine expert at Mercedes F1, as their new group CEO.
Cowell has been unattached since leaving Mercedes in 2020.
He led the team's Formula 1 engine initiative, taking on the role of managing director at Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains.
Cowell played a pivotal role in Mercedes' superiority starting in 2014, as their power unit was unmatched in the competition.
During Cowell's tenure, Mercedes upheld its status as the premier power unit in Formula 1, before he departed prior to the postponed 2020 season.
Cowell has joined Aston Martin as their newest prominent recruit as they aim to evolve into a world-champion team.
He is set to become a part of the team starting October 1, stepping into the role currently held by Martin Whitmarsh, the group's present CEO.
Referring to recent developments, Lawrence Stroll, the proprietor of Aston Martin, expressed his gratitude towards Martin for playing a pivotal role in the company's expansion. Over the past three years, Martin has been a key figure in enhancing the team's capabilities and has been instrumental in reaching several major achievements. These include strengthening the partnership with Honda and the successful launch of the advanced AMR Technology Campus located in Silverstone.
"It brings me great pleasure to introduce Andy as the newest addition to our team during this pivotal period. Our collaboration with Honda, the dedicated support from our main sponsor Aramco, and Andy's guidance are aligning us on a path toward securing a world championship title. Andy has my complete support and will be provided with all necessary resources to achieve victory."
Cowell expressed his delight, stating, "I am ecstatic to be a part of Lawrence's innovative venture and am eager to collaborate with the skilled team that has been brought together."
Formula 1 has always ignited my competitive spirit, and I'm thrilled to come on board with Aston Martin Aramco during a pivotal moment. The nearing completion of the AMR Technology Campus, along with our evolution into a full works team by 2026 alongside our strategic allies Honda and Aramco, marks an exhilarating phase.
