Alonso Addresses Rumors and Struggles: A Candid Look at Aston Martin’s F1 Future Amid Newey Speculation
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey's announcement this week
Fernando Alonso expresses disdain for excuses amid Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just “one person” as rumors persist about Adrian Newey being associated.
Inside sources from the Monza racing circuit during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal Newey's acquisition in the coming days.
Newey, who currently serves as the chief technology officer for Red Bull, is set to leave his position at the start of next year, at which point he will be eligible to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin becoming his future team has intensified lately, while suggestions that he might move to Ferrari have faded.
"Currently, it's all speculation, and in my opinion, it's not the responsibility of a single person to make corrections," Alonso mentioned while at Monza.
"Our focus is on our current assets and outputs. We aim to discern which elements are progressing positively and which negatively, with an eye towards optimizing for 2025."
Next year, Newey could be in a position to guide the development of a 2026 vehicle for a different company, potentially providing them with a significant edge as the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has made significant investments in a new facility at Silverstone and has secured a contract extension for Alonso through 2026. They are collaborating with Honda to develop an engine that meets the new regulations.
However, up to this point, outcomes have generally been quite disappointing.
Aston Martin currently holds the fifth position in the team standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso came in 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll finished 19th.
2025 could serve as a foundational year for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a major push in 2026.
"There's nothing within our control," Alonso responded. "Essentially, we're at the mercy of our team, and I believe that both Lance and I are putting forth our utmost effort every weekend.
"During a motivational weekend, similar to the current one I'm experiencing, I'm aware that it will remain entirely anonymous."
This year, Lance and I have consistently been neck and neck, finishing races just two or three seconds apart, either ahead or trailing. This weekend turned out to be one where I had the upper hand, feeling quite satisfied with the car's performance and pushing myself possibly beyond the 100% mark, which landed me in 11th place.
"Indeed, it's a letdown. It's crucial that we remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I also believe that as a group, we might come to terms with not competing for the top four spots. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, currently trailing behind Williams, Haas, and RB, I believe it's time we elevate our standards. We must improve."
Alonso mentioned regarding the car for next year: "I believe there's still an opportunity to make adjustments.
"McLaren progressed from the bottom to achieving a podium finish within four months, showcasing evident examples.
"Furthermore, Mercedes began on equal footing with us. For the initial four races, we were on par with Mercedes, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, making excuses is not something I endorse."
However, it appears Aston Martin may not see any significant progress in the upcoming races.
"Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that until the car receives an upgrade, the current situation remains inadequate and unacceptable."
Performance fell short at Monza. It was lacking in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary as well.
"Hence, I believe that significant alterations in Baku, Singapore, or Austin won't occur without the introduction of new components."
"The strategy is in place. Everyone on the team is informed about what's going on. They're giving it their all. So indeed, we remain cohesive. We continue to strive. Last weekend, we secured a single point. Today, we nearly achieved two points, and this will be our ongoing struggle."
