2025 Toyota Crown Signia Review: A Spacious Hybrid Wagon for America, But Is It Worth the Price?
Analysis: The 2025 Toyota Crown Signia introduces a hybrid station wagon to the US
Customers purchasing the Crown Signia will appreciate the ample cargo space and cozy seating, although individuals of taller stature may find the headspace somewhat restrictive.
Toyota's newest hybrid model surpasses the Highlander in terms of fuel efficiency, though it doesn't quite match the economy of its sedan counterpart.
Toyota's display area is becoming packed and somewhat perplexing, filled with an array of hybrid crossover SUVs. Their most recent addition appears to be a tactic aimed at advertising.
As the season progresses, the 2025 edition of the Toyota Crown Signia is set to make its debut at car dealerships, offering a larger and more functional version of the Crown sedan, taking over from the Avalon as the leading passenger vehicle in Toyota's range. However, with a starting price of $44,985, destination fee included, some consumers may be taken aback by the less refined aspects of the car, particularly as the cost exceeds the $51,000 mark.
Moreover, Toyota is exaggerating the Crown Signia's qualifications as a crossover. It doesn't really fit the category of a crossover SUV. That's the situation.

The Toyota Crown Signia is being sold as an SUV, but it's actually a wagon. One clue to this is that its back windows don't have factory tinting. According to EPA classifications, which surprisingly cover the majority of pickups, SUVs, and crossovers as trucks, these vehicles can have tinted windows right off the assembly line, something that's quite popular in the U.S. However, due to peculiar regulations, passenger vehicles like wagons and sedans aren't allowed to have pre-tinted windows.

The Crown Signia boasts a more appealing design compared to its sedan version, primarily due to its well-balanced proportions. Unlike the chunky Crown sedan which seems to be perched higher up, the Crown Signia extends its mass into a sleeker wagon shape. Measuring 194.1 inches in length, the Crown Signia is almost identical in size to the Highlander three-row crossover SUV. It features narrow LED daytime running lights positioned close to the edge of the hood, with the main headlamps situated lower down on the bumper. At the back, it's adorned with a set of LED taillights that span the entire width of the vehicle.

The interior of the Crown will be instantly recognizable to those who have experienced a Crown sedan, as it remains largely unchanged from the B-pillars at the front. It boasts a 12.3-inch digital display for the driver and a similarly sized 12.3-inch touchscreen that comes with wireless compatibility for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The console is adorned with glossy piano-black plastic which is prone to scratches, however, the Crown Signia model corrects this with the inclusion of actual buttons, dials, and switches for managing the climate and sound system.

The vehicle's interior comfortably accommodates five passengers, with ample legroom for individuals over six feet tall, although those taller might find the headspace limited. The front seats, elevated by plastic risers, reduce headroom but provide an elevated seating sensation akin to that of a crossover SUV. However, this feeling is deceptive as the Signia's ground clearance is a mere 6.7 inches, comparable to a standard sedan. This elevated seating does, however, facilitate easier entry and exit than its predecessor, the Avalon. The back seat of the Crown Signia, with its 60:40 split capability, allows for transport of long items, such as a surfboard, up to 6.5 feet in length. The cargo area offers a generous 25.8 cubic feet of space when the seats are up, which expands to an impressive 68.8 cubic feet once the second row is folded down. This is a significant increase from the Crown sedan's trunk, which provides only 15.2 cubic feet of space.

The Toyota Crown Signia introduces a hybrid station wagon to the US market
Each model of the Crown Signia features a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine combined with dual electric motors, delivering a total of 240 horsepower. Toyota's representatives remained tight-lipped about the availability of the more robust HybridMax engine with turbo-4 found in the Crown sedan, or the plug-in hybrid variant offered in Japan. All models come with all-wheel drive as a standard feature, predominantly powering the front wheels, but the system can adjust the power distribution up to a 20:80 ratio as needed. During my time in the sunny state of California, I didn't get to witness this feature in action.
The Crown doesn't pick up speed rapidly, yet Toyota's projection of reaching 60 mph from a standstill in 7.1 seconds suggests it has sufficient power for smooth highway entry. Pushing the accelerator all the way down results in a noticeable level of engine noise, which is quite different from the quieter operation you'd expect in a Lexus. The vehicle's engine is designed to deliver a more relaxed performance, allowing it to operate unobtrusively.

The Signia offers a smooth driving experience, leaning towards providing comfort. It maintains composure in movement, yet displayed a bit of unchecked bouncing from the wheels during tight turns in San Diego's mountain roads. However, it's unlikely that many Crown Signias will be navigating through such winding terrain regularly.
The Environmental Protection Agency's assessments indicate that the most efficient wagon with a gasoline engine in the U.S. can achieve 39 miles per gallon in urban settings, 37 on highways, and 38 overall. However, these figures fall short of the Crown sedan's ratings of 42 mpg in the city, 41 on highways, and 41 combined, which can be attributed to the increased mass and less favorable airflow associated with the extended roof design.

The Crown Signia by Toyota prioritizes safety above all
Each Crown Signia model from Toyota comes fitted with a high-tech safety package that features tech such as emergency braking that can detect pedestrians, lane-keeping assistance, speed-regulating cruise control, and alerts for vehicles in your blind spot. For an additional $1,865, the Advanced Technology Package is available but only for the pricier Limited version. This package includes a 360-degree camera setup, sensors to assist with parking, and warnings for oncoming traffic at the front.

Toyota's hybrid crossover space becomes more packed
For the 2025 Crown Signia series, the offerings are straightforward. The entry-level XLE variant is priced at $44,985, and the upscale Limited version is available for $51,250. Each model comes with a decent array of features, although it's somewhat surprising that the Limited version, priced over $50,000, doesn't include an adjustable lumbar feature for the front passenger seat.
The Crown Signia by Toyota comes with a price tag that closely matches that of the Highlander Hybrid models, which, while similar in dimensions, provide the added feature of a third-row seat.
Fans of wagons or those in the market for a unique vehicle might find the Crown Signia appealing. However, the limited seating capacity may lead many families to consider the Highlander instead, which is likely found elsewhere on the dealership floor.
Toyota covered the travel expenses, and I ended up with a sunburn while conducting this test drive evaluation for you.
