Volvo EX30 U.S. Launch Delayed to 2025 Amid Rising Tariffs and Global Supply Chain Shifts

Published

on

The launch of the Volvo EX30, a compact electric SUV, has been postponed in the U.S. until 2025. Initially set for release this summer, Volvo Car USA informed dealers on Wednesday that the arrival of the vehicle will be pushed back due to tariffs.

Volvo announced that it will provide customers who have preordered its most economical model the opportunity to drive other new Volvo vehicles until their vehicle is available.

Initially, the entry-level EX30 Core model featuring a single motor and rear-wheel drive was offered at $36,245, destination fees included. This positioned it as one of the most cost-effective electric vehicles on the market, second only to the Nissan Leaf. During evaluations in March, this compact hatchback seemed remarkably well-priced. The high-end Ultra model with dual motors and all-wheel drive was the most expensive in the series, priced at $47,895.

Volvo representative Russell Datz attributed the postponement to factors outside of Volvo's influence.

"In the time since our announcement towards the end of 2023, the worldwide automotive scene has undergone considerable transformation," Datz explained to Green Car Reports during a telephone interview. "Tariffs were indeed a factor in our decision-making process."

In 2022, Volvo had intentions to move the manufacturing of its budget-friendly electric vehicle from China to Ghent, Belgium, by 2025. However, this plan was reconsidered after the Biden administration declared in May 2024 that tariffs on electric vehicles would double from 25% to 100%. Additionally, the tariff on lithium-ion batteries and other essential components used in battery production would see an increase from 7.5% to 25%.

In a recent move, the European Union announced a proposal last week to impose a 38% tariff on Chinese electric vehicle imports, in response to the surge of low-cost EVs from China entering international markets.

At present, no electric vehicle made in the country is available at a starting price comparable to the intended price of the EX30.

Volvo is stepping up its manufacturing activities in Ghent, aiming for the EX30 to hit the U.S. market by 2025. Currently, there are no intentions to produce it locally, for example at Volvo’s facility in Charleston, South Carolina, which began assembling the 2025 Volvo EX90, an electric SUV with three rows, in June.

Volvo was unable to confirm whether the EX30 would retain its 2025 model designation upon its eventual release.
