Verstappen’s Dominance Challenged: Five Key Takeaways from the F1 Spanish Grand Prix
Top Five Discussion Highlights from the F1 Circuit Following the Spanish Grand Prix
A Recap of the Main Conversations at the Barcelona Circuit Post F1 Spanish Grand Prix
Max Verstappen secured consecutive victories by edging out Lando Norris in Barcelona, yet the Spanish Grand Prix offered hopeful indications that the season could feature more competition beyond a single dominant player.
Crash.net's Formula 1 editor, Lewis Larkam, shares his insights from attending the season's 10th race in 2024…
Is Lando Norris, known for his self-critique, capable of contending for the championship?
Despite not turning his second pole position into a win in Spain and experiencing another loss to Verstappen, Norris has consistently proven to be a formidable adversary for the Dutch driver in recent times.
After securing his first grand prix victory in Miami by outperforming Verstappen, Norris has subsequently taken the runner-up spot behind the Red Bull ace in three of the following four races. This streak of steady performances has allowed the 24-year-old from Britain to surpass Ferrari's Charles Leclerc for the second position in the global championship standings, trailing Verstappen by 69 points.
With 14 competitions remaining, is it possible for Norris to contend with Verstappen for this year's F1 championship title?
Norris agreed when posed with the same query, later admitting, "Today, I could have performed better. We had an opportunity to close the gap on Max and possibly even outpace him in Canada. In two races where I came in second, he managed to take the win."
"However, it's crucial that Max starts losing. Despite advancing to second place in the championship, the position doesn't concern me. Whether I'm in second or 10th doesn't make a difference. What's significant is the difference in points between Max and myself, and he continues to widen that gap."
"I can't let him get too far ahead. Had I made smarter choices in Canada, and had my start been stronger today, we would have secured victories in two races.
"Admittedly, there's been an abundance of missed opportunities and hypotheticals, yet we possess the necessary capabilities; it boils down to effectively assembling them."
Is McLaren's car currently the quickest?
At Imola, Norris was just under a second away from winning, and in Spain, he was only two seconds behind Verstappen, making a strong push towards the end.
Securing the top spot in Barcelona's qualifying highlighted the capabilities of McLaren's MCL38, which, according to Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, is currently the premier setup in Formula 1.

"In Sainz's view, currently, the McLaren is the most reliable vehicle on the track."
"It seems Red Bull faces challenges at specific circuits, much like us. McLaren, on the other hand, shows speed across all kinds of tracks. They excel in low-speed conditions and manage to maintain pace through turns three and nine. They even topped the speed charts in turn five."
"From my perspective, McLaren appears to be in a position where they have no evident flaws at the moment. Red Bull remains a strong competitor, of course, but the remarkable thing about McLaren is their consistent speed across all areas."
Mercedes leader Toto Wolff holds the opinion that McLaren and Red Bull are presently the top contenders in Formula 1 racing.
"The McLaren appeared to be extremely fast. Just how fast, I'm not certain. I believe that Max consistently holds a bit in reserve and has the ability to stand out," he commented.
"Clearly, at this time, these two are leading the way. Although there's not much separating them, they are undoubtedly establishing the standard."
Friction at Ferrari?
The atmosphere between the Ferrari teammates escalated into conflict during Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix.
In a dramatic moment at Turn 1, Carlos Sainz attempted an ambitious move around the outside of Charles Leclerc, resulting in Leclerc's front wing making contact with Sainz's rear right tire. This incident compelled Sainz to veer off onto the escape road.
Ultimately, Leclerc crossed the finish line in front of Sainz, securing the fourth position. However, post-race, the pair appeared to blame one another for certain issues, engaging in a heated exchange in the parc ferme area.
Leclerc implied Sainz was trying to stand out in his home Grand Prix due to the insecurity surrounding his future in Formula 1, given his ongoing quest for a position following his replacement by Lewis Hamilton. In response, Sainz countered, "Leclerc often finds something to gripe about after the races."
However, Ferrari's team leader, Frederic Vasseur, swiftly dismissed the notion of growing strain between Leclerc and Sainz, attributing it to the heightened emotions that naturally occur right after a race.
"He suggested we have a discussion and avoid jumping to conclusions based solely on the driver's initial remark as he exited the vehicle."
What's next for Sergio Perez?
Upon reaching Barcelona, Sergio Perez was aware that he required an impressive showing to reverse his latest dip in performance, yet he failed to provide it.
In what turned out to be another disappointing performance, the driver from Mexico fell short again during a weekend where his teammate celebrated his seventh victory in 10 races. In comparison, Perez has not yet had the opportunity to celebrate a first-place finish this season and has made it to the podium just four times.
Perez managed to reach Q3 for the first time in four attempts, but he ended up recording only the eighth quickest time, notably lagging behind Verstappen who secured the second spot. His position was further impacted by a three-place grid penalty, relegating him to 11th position for the start.
Red Bull chose a strategy involving three pit stops for Perez, who managed to overtake Pierre Gasly's Alpine towards the end of the race to secure the eighth position, yet he concluded the race nearly a minute after Verstappen.
Despite Perez's performance, Red Bull has likely increased their lead in both global competitions, a point that team leader Christian Horner emphasized, though he acknowledged that Verstappen's current form is playing a crucial role.
"Checo's involvement is crucial, both he and the team are aware," Horner emphasized. "In the initial four to five races of the season, Checo was exceptional. Our goal is to help him return to that mindset."
"He's encountered a few challenging competitions recently, and luck hasn't been on his side. In my opinion, his performance heavily relies on his confidence levels. He managed to score some points this time and had a solid race, so hopefully, this will boost his morale for the future events."
Alpine sees a boost as Flavio Briatore makes a comeback
Flavio Briatore's reentry into F1, joining Alpine, stood out as a major talking point during the weekend event in Barcelona.
At the age of 74, Briatore received a permanent exclusion from Formula 1 due to his involvement in the infamous 'Crashgate' incident during the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix. However, this lifetime ban was subsequently revoked by the FIA upon appeal.
The selection drew attention to Alpine and put team principal Bruno Famin in the hot seat for his steadfast support of Briatore’s return.
Over the weekend, the French team experienced a much-needed uplift on the race track, showing significant improvement after a dismal beginning to their season.
Gasly transformed a remarkable qualifying performance into a ninth-place finish, surpassing his teammate Esteban Ocon, who also scored points, helping Alpine to ascend to seventh in the constructors' rankings.
