Canadian Grand Prix Evaluations: A Formula 1 Competitor Hits the Season's Nadir in Scores
Crash.net's assessments of F1 drivers at the 2024 Canadian GP.
Max Verstappen – 9.5
Verstappen delivered a performance worthy of a champion at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, securing his 60th career victory. Apart from a single minor mistake, the Dutch driver showcased flawless racing.
Lando Norris – 9
Norris was on the verge of victory in Montreal, showcasing exceptional skill during his initial run on intermediate tires, where he managed to pull ahead of Verstappen by 11 seconds. Unfortunately, a poorly-timed Safety Car intervention resulted in him falling to third place.
George Russell – 8.5
The Canadian Grand Prix might have been a chance for Russell and Mercedes to shine that unfortunately slipped away. In dry conditions, the W15 seemed to be in a league of its own, especially with Russell behind the wheel. Nonetheless, several errors prevented him from contesting Verstappen for the victory.
Lewis Hamilton scored a 7.5
Hamilton's performance in Canada left much to be desired. Securing only the seventh spot in the qualifiers while his teammate achieved pole position, he lagged behind Alonso for more than 20 laps, only advancing past him during pit stops. Moreover, his attempt to hold off Russell was notably lacking in aggression.
Oscar Piastri – 8
Piastri experienced some bad luck, finishing in fifth place after being placed at a disadvantage in the final laps against the pair of Mercedes competitors, who had equipped new tyres during the Safety Car period.
Fernando Alonso – 8.5
Following several disappointing weekends, Alonso returned to form in Canada. Despite successfully keeping Hamilton at bay for more than 20 laps, it was evident that the Aston Martin was only the fourth quickest car on the Montreal circuit this weekend, making sixth place the highest achievable finish.
Lance Stroll – 7.5
Stroll delivered a commendable performance during the weekend races in his home country, securing a position just one spot behind his team member.
Daniel Ricciardo – 8
Undoubtedly, Canada marked Ricciardo's most outstanding performance of the season. He shone during qualifying, securing a fifth-place start. Despite a setback from a premature start, he managed to claw back into a points-scoring position, thanks to the RB's superior speed compared to his midfield competitors.
Pierre Gasly secured another finish within the points, as both Alpines crossed the finish line within the top 10 without incident. His advantage over Ocon on the track was the result of team instructions.
Esteban Ocon scored a commendable 7.5 for his efforts, despite being at a disadvantage with a weightier chassis compared to Gasly. He was on track for a ninth-place finish, but team directives in the final stages meant he had to adjust his position, much to his chagrin.
Nico Hulkenberg – 6.5
Hulkenberg experienced an unusually disappointing weekend, failing to advance beyond the first qualifying round. Similar to Magnussen, he initially made some headway with the wet tyres but fell behind as the race went on.
Kevin Magnussen – 7
This weekend, Magnussen outperformed Hulkenberg, shining brightly in the race's initial stages. He impressively held a position as high as fifth while racing on wet tires.
Valtteri Bottas scored a 6.5
Starting from the pit lane, Bottas managed to climb up to the 12th position driving for Sauber but faced difficulties after changing to slick tires. However, during qualifying, he was almost a full second faster than his teammate Zhou.
Yuki Tsunoda – 6
Tsunoda lost a chance to end up in the points due to an unusual error at Turn 8.
Zhou Guanyu – 4.5
Zhou had a weekend to forget, with two crashes during practice sessions. He struggled with speed throughout the race, ending up at the bottom of the list of drivers who completed the race.
Carlos Sainz – 4.5
The weekend in Canada was disappointing for Ferrari, worsened by Sainz's spin that resulted in both him and Albon being eliminated from the competition.
Alex Albon – 8
Albon was on track for scoring points following a strong performance throughout the weekend. Unfortunately, he was unable to steer clear of Sainz's Ferrari.
Sergio Perez had a terrible weekend. He was eliminated in the first qualifying round and later crashed. Additionally, he received a three-place grid penalty for heading back to the pits with significant damage to his car. It was a complete debacle.
Charles Leclerc – 6.5
Ferrari found themselves unexpectedly slow during the Canadian Grand Prix, with Leclerc being eliminated in the second qualifying round. A problem with the engine hampered his opportunity to advance further, leading him to take a risk by switching to slick tires in the pits.
Logan Sargeant – 4
Sargeant showed improved speed this time around, yet it still didn't suffice to outperform Albon in qualifying, marking the 30th consecutive time he's been outpaced. His race came to an early end following a collision with the barriers.
