Tesla Clarifies Cybertruck Range Extender Installation: Not a DIY Job, Says Lead Engineer
The additional battery that extends the driving range for the Tesla Cybertruck cannot be installed by the consumers themselves.
Details have emerged for Cybertruck enthusiasts regarding the mechanics of the add-on battery that boosts travel distance.
During the weekend, Wes Morrill, who spearheads the Cybertruck project at Tesla, clarified that the additional battery pack designed to extend driving range won't be available for installation by consumers.
Morrill addressed an inquiry about X, previously known as Twitter, regarding whether the extended battery would be designed for simple removal or available to rent from a nearby service facility.
"Morrill replied on X, stating that Tesla will ensure all range extenders are securely installed to maintain safety during an accident."
Wes Morrill has pointed out on platform X that the Cybertruck's extended range battery cannot be installed by consumers themselves.
Consequently, vehicle owners must arrange a maintenance visit with Tesla to either fit or take out the additional battery pack. The fate of the battery pack upon removal remains uncertain.
Tesla has not yet disclosed any details regarding the specifications or cost for the extended range battery option, and there is no information on when this feature will be available.
Head of Tesla, Elon Musk, discusses additional battery pack for Cybertruck's driving distance.
The head of Tesla and proprietor of X.com (previously known as Twitter), Elon Musk, remarked on the site following the launch of the truck, indicating that the auxiliary battery pack would occupy roughly 33% of the vehicle's cargo space.
Despite the addition of an optional battery pack to extend its range, the Cybertruck will not achieve the initially advertised 500-mile range.
Tesla has unveiled three versions of its Cybertruck, each with different motor configurations: a single motor Rear-Wheel Drive, a Dual-Motor version, and a Tri-Motor variant dubbed the Cyberbeast. They are advertised to achieve distances of 250, 300, and 500 miles on a single charge, respectively. However, these figures have not been verified by the Environmental Protection Agency. Tesla suggests that an additional battery option could push the Cybertruck's range over 470 miles, although it's unspecified which version this applies to.
In April, Tesla issued a recall for the Cybertruck because the accelerator pedals were getting stuck, and then in June, they had to recall it once more for issues with a malfunctioning wiper motor and improperly secured trim.
