South Pasadena Pioneers Green Policing: First U.S. City to Deploy All-Electric Tesla Police Fleet
California to Introduce First Fully Electric Police Vehicle Fleet
Police vehicles are making the shift to electric power.
On Monday, authorities from the South Pasadena Police Department in California shared the news that their police fleet is the first one in the United States to completely transition to electric vehicles.
The department plans to fully transition its fleet of vehicles from those that run on gasoline to electric vehicles

The police force will soon include 20 Teslas in their vehicle lineup. They plan to integrate 10 Tesla Model Ys for regular patrols and 10 Model 3s for investigative and office use. Supervisor Kathryn Barger initially shared images of the new electric patrol cars on Facebook, which were then reposted on the City of South Pasadena's fan page.
UP.FIT, a branch of Tesla modification specialist Unplugged Performance, will modify Teslas for use in police patrol and office roles.

The latest update from Pasadena follows closely on the heels of a statement from the Irvine Police Department regarding their upcoming acquisition of a Tesla Cybertruck. This vehicle is set to be modified for law enforcement use by UP.FIT.
South Pasadena City Hall now features 34 new electric charging stations for vehicles. There are additional plans to put similar charging units at the local police and fire stations. These will be supported by a solar energy setup with battery storage to maintain charging capabilities even during electricity blackouts.
"South Pasadena's Mayor Evelyn Zneimer stated that this shift mirrors the city's commitment to a sustainable future, which is grounded in responsible financial governance and a dedication to preserving the environment."
Zneimer mentioned that the support of the city council was instrumental in the move towards establishing a modern police force fit for the 21st century.
Chief Brian Solinsky of the South Pasadena Police stated that adopting these new vehicles presents a chance for the department to update to a more modern fleet.
Municipal employees anticipate a reduction in energy expenses, estimating savings of around $4,000 for each vehicle. Additionally, the switch to an electric vehicle (EV) fleet should cut the per-mile cost by at least 50% compared to the current gasoline-fueled vehicles, along with decreased costs for vehicle upkeep.
The project is receiving the majority of its financial support through collaborations. The Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee is allocating close to half a million dollars for clean transportation initiatives. Work valued around $530,000 will be funded by Southern California Edison through their Charge Ready initiative. Additionally, the Clean Power Alliance is supplying solar and battery storage systems at no charge through their Power Ready Program. The city has announced that its total outlay for the endeavor will amount to $1.85 million, encompassing the expenditure for electric vehicle charging stations and the leasing costs for Tesla vehicles.
Traditionally, law enforcement agencies have shown interest in integrating electric vehicles into their vehicle pools, but have recognized the limited availability of suitable models. The primary concern mentioned is the financial aspect.
