A prominent think tank has criticized major political parties for not clearly explaining how they plan to finance their proposed spending, describing the information provided as "thin gruel."
The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) criticized both the Conservative and Labour parties for what it calls a persistent "conspiracy of silence" regarding their plans to address issues like the reduction of NHS waiting times.
Unveiling their analysis of key reports, the Institute for Fiscal Studies' Paul Johnson indicated that funding for numerous public services might have to be reduced in the coming parliamentary term unless the government manages to curb its debt or opts to raise taxes more.
He dismissed assertions that the manifestos were financially detailed, contending that the duo was confronted with a "stark choice" of either implementing tax increases that went beyond their campaign promises, making spending reductions, or opting for heightened borrowing.

Mr. Johnson highlighted the strain caused by government debt levels that are the highest in 60 years, coinciding with an almost unprecedented tax load.
He explained that a significant portion of this issue could be attributed to an annual rise in debt interest expenses of £50 billion more than anticipated, along with an expanding welfare budget due to the aftermath of the COVID pandemic and the subsequent cost of living crisis sparked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Labour's strategy hinges on economic growth – but what happens if it fails to materialize? The Liberal Democrat's manifesto shows less ambition compared to their earlier ones.
