Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, Oleksandra Matviichuk, and Lorent Saleh, recipients of the Sakharov Prize, are encouraging citizens to engage in the European elections.
In a campaign video tagged #UseYourVoice, the most recent recipients of the Sakharov Prize, along with their teams, share their messages with citizens of the EU ahead of the European elections taking place from June 6 to June 9.
"Global liberties are diminishing. Exercise your right to speak up for democracy and advocate for those who are voiceless," urged Oleksandra Matviichuk, the 2022 recipient of the Sakharov Prize and head of the “Center for Civil Liberties,” a non-governmental organization that records war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Russian military in Ukraine.
"Fellow Europeans, you possess a valuable asset: the ability to select your political leaders and shape your own destiny," emphasizes Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the Belarusian opposition leader and one of the recipients of the 2020 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought.
"Lorent Saleh, ein früherer politischer Häftling und Empfänger des Sacharow-Preises im Jahr 2017, der die demokratische Widerstandsbewegung in Venezuela repräsentiert, betont, dass Demokratie ein schwierig zu errichtendes System ist, welches jedoch sehr einfach verloren gehen kann."
The video also features commentary from Leonid Volkov, who was once the chief of staff for Alexei Navalny, a recipient of the 2021 Sakharov Prize. Volkov passed away on February 16, 2024, while detained in Russia and was known for his strong criticism of Vladimir Putin. Members from the Sakharov Fellowship Network, including Swedish fashion designer Louise Xin, also convey their message to citizens of the European Union.
