Russell Reflects on Missed Victory in Canada: Admits ‘One Too Many Mistakes’ Cost Mercedes
George Russell acknowledges that “excessive errors at crucial times” might have deprived Mercedes of a win
Reflecting on the race in Canada, George Russell lamented over a series of mishaps he believes prevented Mercedes from potentially clinching victory.
George Russell acknowledges that "a few errors" led to him and Mercedes missing out on a possible victory at the F1 Canadian Grand Prix.
The driver from Mercedes began the race in the lead position and initially dominated, but faced setbacks due to multiple errors and an incident involving a crash with McLaren's Oscar Piastri, which resulted in him finishing in third place, trailing behind Max Verstappen and Lando Norris.
This represented the strongest performance of the season for Mercedes, yet Russell couldn't shake off the sensation that the team let a chance slip away in Montreal.
"Russell expressed during the parc ferme interviews that, truthfully, it seemed like a chance had slipped away."
"At the start of the race, we had a rapid pace with the intermediate tires, but then Lando quickly caught up with us. After that, we switched back to the dry tires, where I made a few errors while trying to push the boundaries, which ultimately cost us."
Russell's initial significant mistake occurred on the 51st lap when he veered off track at the chicane of Turn 8. This error enabled Norris to reclaim his position, reversing the overtake Russell had achieved against his compatriot just a lap earlier.
Russell subsequently had to veer off into the run-off zone following an assertive move to overtake Piastri, which led to a collision at the last chicane.
Russell fell to fourth place, trailing his Mercedes colleague Lewis Hamilton, yet he managed to reclaim a spot on the podium with a remarkable overtaking maneuver at that corner during the second-to-last laps.
"He elucidated that they were quick. At that stage of the competition, Max was in a formidable position. However, after switching to the medium tires towards the finale, their speed significantly increased."
"I believe the error I made while attempting to pass Oscar, which resulted in losing my spot to Lewis, potentially cost us a second-place finish and perhaps a chance to challenge Max later on in the contest."
"However, we're going to focus on the bright side of this weekend. Achieving our first podium and pole position of the year has us looking forward to what's next with anticipation."
In a press conference following the race, Russell mentioned, "Honestly, if someone had informed us before this weekend that we would achieve pole position and finish in third place, we might not have believed it."
"The race was incredibly challenging for all the participants. If you deviate even by a tiny bit, you're out. In my case, I believe it was a series of critical errors at crucial times that prevented us from contending with the leading duo in the final stages of the race."
