Rivals Charge Ahead: Tesla’s Supercharger Pause Fuels $5B Federal EV Infrastructure Race
Amidst doubts about Tesla Supercharger network's expansion, competing EV charging companies view this as a chance to expand during the $5 billion government infrastructure rollout.
Elon Musk, the chief executive of Tesla, unexpectedly let go of the majority of the staff responsible for the company's Supercharger stations. However, he has now backtracked on that decision, inviting former employees to return. Despite this, Tesla has affirmed its commitment to completing ongoing infrastructure projects, though it may slow down the rapid expansion of its Supercharger network. According to Politico, this presents an opportunity for competing charging networks to gain ground.
These networks are currently strategizing the addition of further charging points and are actively pursuing former Tesla staff who were let go, as stated in the report. Take EnviroSpark Energy Solutions, headquartered in Atlanta, for instance; they recently recruited "a dozen former Tesla workers" in the past month, and secured a $15 million investment shortly after Tesla announced cuts. Initially, the company focused on setting up charging stations for Tesla, but has since shifted its focus towards establishing its own charging network.

Last week, Revel, headquartered in New York City, appointed former Tesla expert Edward Noseworthy as the head of their design and construction division, as reported by Politico. Additionally, EVgo's vice president, Sara Rafalson, mentioned to Politico that the company is actively engaging with potential candidates.
Shortly following Tesla's disclosure of job cuts connected to its Supercharger stations, BP revealed its intentions to acquire unused locations from Tesla's charging grid for its purposes. The petroleum company aims to invest $1 billion by the year 2030 with the objective of setting up more than 3,000 charging units across the United States.
According to Politico, there's an eagerness to capture a portion of Tesla's stake in the $5 billion government investment dedicated to electric vehicle charging systems. This initiative is a key feature of the infrastructure legislation enacted by the Biden administration in 2021. The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, as it's known, aims to allocate these funds towards the development of rapid charging stations for long-distance travel over a period of five years.

Construction for the charging network supported by NEVI funds commenced in the previous year, with Ohio hosting the inaugural location as of December. NEVI plays a role in the expansion of the nationwide rapid-charging infrastructure, yet there's a considerable journey ahead before the buildout is complete.
National regulations stipulate that for the NEVI funds to be utilized, there must be four 150-kW charging points installed every 50 miles. Research conducted in 2023 indicates that to comply with these requirements, an additional 1,104 electric vehicle rapid charging stations are necessary.
