Essential qualities of Mercedes' rising star, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, highlighted
Exploring the potential successor to Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in 2025
Key characteristics of Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the potential successor to Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, have been pinpointed.
Hamilton's departure to Ferrari in 2025 opens up one of the only four remaining spots yet to be claimed for next season.
Teenager Antonelli, who is currently competing in Formula 2, is expected to step up to Formula 1, filling the spot left by Hamilton.
The 17-year-old from Italy has long been considered an extraordinary young talent.
Antonelli "was presented with multiple offers from F1 driver academies when he was merely 13 years old," F2 commentator Alex Jacques informed F1.com.
Upon selecting Mercedes to steer his professional path, Antonelli showcased remarkable precision and mastery, securing a victory at Zandvoort (the location of this weekend's Formula 1 comeback) during a championship-winning FRECA season.
Jacques is convinced that winning the race at Zandvoort under challenging circumstances served as a signal to potential Formula 1 team leaders of his capability to advance to the next level.
"Excelling in damp conditions can showcase outstanding skill," he stated.
Jacques notes that Antonelli has demonstrated an exceptional level of composure for his age while racing.
He emphasized, "Being calm and flexible are essential qualities for today's drivers."
Mercedes chose to skip Formula 3 and directly promote Antonelli to Formula 2 this year.
He became a part of Prema, a team known for nurturing the talents of Pierre Gasly, Charles Leclerc, Mick Schumacher, and Oscar Piastri.
Piastri remarkably clinched the F2 championship in his debut season alongside participating in a developmental program for F1. This year, Antonelli has managed to juggle his F2 commitments while also testing for Mercedes in their F1 vehicles.
Amidst rainy conditions at Silverstone, Antonelli secured his inaugural Formula 1 race win. Additionally, he triumphed in the Formula 2 main event in Hungary.
Jacques argued that the pair of wins merely suggested a level of skill that was anticipated to be so evident, it would make a promotion to Formula 1 indisputable.
Jacques mentioned that Antonelli possesses "remarkable innate quickness, a composed mindset, and swift adaptability," all of which he intends to leverage in the upcoming F1 season.
It appears he is poised to join a team that has found new energy.
Mercedes has secured victories in three out of the last four Grand Prix races, with Hamilton claiming two of those wins.
Should they continue their strong performance and secure additional victories this season, the expectations on Antonelli could potentially rise should he be chosen to succeed Hamilton.
However, Toto Wolff has hardly concealed his high regard for the young racer's abilities.
Mercedes might be nurturing the next Max Verstappen.
