Ricciardo Apologizes After Hulkenberg Collision at Monza: A Penalty-Plagued Italian GP for RB Team
Daniel Ricciardo on collision with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo comments on the altercation with Haas during the Italian Grand Prix in Formula 1
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he apologized to Nico Hulkenberg after their collision on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull driver Ricciardo was contending with Hulkenberg in the middle of the field during the first lap of Sunday's race at Monza when the two collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but then he experienced a collision. This incident caused Hulkenberg in the Haas to be pushed onto the dirt, allowing Kevin Magnussen, his teammate, to overtake him.
The Australian driver received a five-second penalty for the incident, but later had to endure a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics made contact with his car while he was serving the initial penalty during his pitstop.
Ricciardo wrapped up a challenging race on home turf for the Red Bull team by finishing in 13th place.
“In the end, our speed was lacking today, even aside from the penalties,” he remarked.
"We gave it our best shot, and I was having fun with the close racing in the beginning, but I collided with Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I had a conversation with him. I believed there was enough space, but I felt the impact, which means I didn't leave enough room, so I said sorry."
"It's challenging because you push yourself to the limit, but even the tiniest differences can impact the outcome."
"The car performed well afterward, and we gave it everything we had. I aimed to extract the maximum potential from the car starting from Friday afternoon up until today."
“From my perspective, I’m feeling much improved this weekend, and we nearly managed to earn some points.”
Tsunoda 'frustrated'
Laurent Mekies from RB stated that the Italian GP was largely influenced by Hulkenberg. A crash involving Haas driver Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda led to the Japanese driver's race coming to an early end.
"I'm quite upset; it's unfortunate that my race ended just a few laps in because of a collision with Nico," Tsunoda expressed.
"I attempted to give him plenty of room, but it appeared he froze up, resulting in him losing control and colliding with me."
"Regrettably, we had to pull the car out of the race due to damage sustained on its floor."
“I noticed it immediately and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding and I just couldn't manage to drive it.”
"We're heading to Baku and Singapore next, and our car is expected to do well on those tracks. We're optimistic about having successful weekends there."
Mekies is upset about the Tsunoda incident because it caused him to miss important track time with the upgraded RB car at Monza.
“Today’s race was largely influenced by Hulkenberg’s actions. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track, and subsequently, Nico collided with Yuki, which resulted in us having to retire the car,” he explained.
"The most disappointing thing about Yuki's retirement is missing out on 40 laps that could have helped us better understand the new updates we implemented."
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty due to an error in the implementation of the initial penalty."
"We must evaluate our procedures for this situation and take lessons from the error made today. Such incidents occur, but overall, our pit crew's performance has been outstanding this season."
