Ricciardo Apologizes After Hulkenberg Clash: Italian GP Drama Unfolds
Daniel Ricciardo comments on the collision with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo responds to the incident involving Haas during the F1 Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he had apologized to Nico Hulkenberg after they collided on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull's driver Ricciardo and Hulkenberg were engaged in a fight in the middle of the pack during the first lap of Sunday's race at Monza when they collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed there was enough room, but then experienced a collision – resulting in Hulkenberg’s Haas being pushed onto the dirt and losing a position to his teammate, Kevin Magnussen.
The Australian driver initially received a five-second penalty for the incident. However, he later had to serve a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics made contact with his car during the original penalty at the pit stop.
Ricciardo finished a difficult race in his home country for the Red Bull team in 13th place.
“We just didn’t have the speed today, even if you don’t count the penalties,” he commented.
"We gave it our best shot, and I was having fun battling side-by-side at the beginning, but I collided with Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I talked to him and expressed that I believed we had enough space, but I felt the impact, so I realized I hadn't given him sufficient room. I apologized for that."
“Competing intensely is challenging because even the tiniest differences can be crucial.”
"The car performed well afterward, and we gave it our all with the resources available to us. From Friday afternoon until today, I was striving to extract the utmost potential from the car."
"I personally feel much better this weekend, and we were nearly able to score points."
Tsunoda felt 'frustrated'
The Italian Grand Prix for RB was heavily influenced by Hulkenberg, according to team member Laurent Mekies. A crash involving Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda led to the Japanese driver being forced out of the race.
"I’m really disappointed; it’s unfortunate that my race ended just a few laps in because of a collision with Nico," Tsunoda remarked.
"I attempted to give plenty of room, but it appeared he froze up, lost control, and collided with me."
"Regrettably, we were forced to withdraw the car due to damage sustained on the floor."
"I noticed it immediately and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding, making it impossible for me to control it."
"We're heading to Baku and Singapore next, and our car is expected to do well at those circuits. We're optimistic about having successful weekends there."
Mekies is upset about the Tsunoda incident because it cost him important time on the track with the new RB car that was brought to Monza.
"Regarding today's race, it can be observed that Hulkenberg had significant control over it. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Subsequently, Nico collided with Yuki, which resulted in us having to retire the car," he remarked.
"The biggest disappointment about Yuki's retirement is missing out on 40 laps that could have helped us learn more about the new updates we implemented here."
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty because the initial penalty wasn't carried out properly."
"We must evaluate our procedures in this situation and take lessons from the error made today. While such incidents do occur, our pit crew's performance has largely been outstanding this season."
