Ricciardo Apologizes After Hulkenberg Clash and Penalty-laden Italian GP; Tsunoda Expresses Frustration Over Early Exit
Daniel Ricciardo addresses collision with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo comments on the mishap involving Haas during the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he apologized to Nico Hulkenberg after they collided during the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
During the first lap of Sunday's race at Monza, RB driver Ricciardo and Hulkenberg clashed in the middle of the pack at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but then experienced a collision – causing Hulkenberg's Haas to be pushed onto the dirt, allowing Kevin Magnussen, Hulkenberg's teammate, to overtake.
An Australian driver received a five-second penalty for an incident. However, a mechanic touched his car while he was serving this penalty during a pitstop, leading to an additional 10-second penalty.
Ricciardo concluded a difficult race at his home track for the Red Bull team, finishing in 13th place.
"In the end, we just didn't have the speed today, even if you don't consider the penalties," he stated.
"We gave it a shot, and I was having fun racing side-by-side at the beginning, but I ended up colliding with Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I had a conversation with him. I initially believed there was enough space, but then I felt the collision, indicating I hadn't provided sufficient room. I apologized for that."
"It's challenging because you put in a lot of effort, but even the tiniest differences can have an impact."
"The car was functioning well afterwards, and we pushed it to its limits with the resources available. From Friday afternoon until today, I was striving to extract the best performance from the vehicle."
"I personally feel much better this weekend, and we were nearly able to earn some points."
Tsunoda's 'frustration'
According to team member Laurent Mekies, the Italian Grand Prix for Red Bull was heavily influenced by Nico Hulkenberg. A crash involving Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda led to the early conclusion of Tsunoda's race.
"I'm quite disappointed; it's unfortunate that my race ended just a few laps in because of a collision with Nico," Tsunoda expressed.
"I attempted to give as much room as I could, but it appeared he froze, lost control, and collided with me."
“Regrettably, we had to withdraw the car from the race due to damage sustained to the floor.
"I noticed it immediately and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding and I just couldn't control it."
"Up next are Baku and Singapore. Our vehicle is expected to do well on those tracks, so we're optimistic about having successful weekends."
Mekies is upset about the Tsunoda incident because it caused him to miss important track time with the upgraded RB car at Monza.
"Regarding today's race, it can be noted that Hulkenberg set the pace. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track, and then Nico collided with Yuki, which resulted in us having to retire the car," he stated.
One of the biggest disappointments about Yuki retiring is missing out on 40 laps that could have helped us better understand the new updates we brought in.
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty due to an error in the implementation of the initial penalty.
"We must reassess our procedures in situations like this and take lessons from today's error. While such incidents occur, our pit crew has typically performed outstandingly this season."
