Revving Down: Unpacking F1’s Summer Shut Down Post-Belgian GP Triumph and Its Impact
What does the summer break in Formula 1 signify, its purpose, and its duration?
This break transpires following the final Grand Prix event of July, which in 2024 unfolds subsequent to the F1 Belgian Grand Prix. This particular race saw George Russell's disqualification, enabling Lewis Hamilton to secure the victory.
According to Article 21.8 in the sports regulations, F1 teams are required to close their factories for a period of 14 days.
During this two-week period, the creation, design, or manufacturing of vehicles is strictly prohibited.
Only the simplest tasks, along with departments not directly engaged in the development of cars, are permitted to proceed.
The regulation ensures that employees of Formula 1 teams are allotted time off from their duties.
Employees are occupied with final preparations on their latest vehicles ahead of the upcoming season, especially during the Christmas and New Year period.
Thus, the summer hiatus is a compulsory interval during which Formula 1 teams are required to give their employees a break.
Groups are not required to schedule their two-week pauses concurrently.
When does the summer hiatus conclude?
The Formula 1 season recommences with the F1 Dutch Grand Prix from August 23rd to 25th.
Following that, Formula 1 will host nine more Grand Prix events leading up to the season finale, featuring the overseas races.
