The practice of assigning single-word ratings to public schools by Ofsted has been discontinued effective immediately, a change celebrated as a significant milestone for children.
Before, the educational oversight body graded schools it evaluated with one of four ratings: outstanding, good, requires improvement, or inadequate.
Starting this academic year, the Department for Education (DfE) has introduced four new grades that will be assigned across the current sub-categories: quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management.
Starting in September 2025, schools will begin issuing report cards. These will offer parents a detailed evaluation of school performance and aim to make inspections more impactful in promoting enhancements, the statement explained.
The revision comes after consultations with educational stakeholders and the relatives of headteacher Ruth Perry, who died by suicide following an Ofsted evaluation that demoted her Caversham Primary School in Reading from "outstanding" to "inadequate" due to issues related to safeguarding.
In 2022, an inquest by the coroner determined that the inspection procedures played a role in her demise.
The Department for Education stated that simplistic, single phrase ratings do not offer a just and precise evaluation of a school's overall performance, and that this adjustment will assist in dismantling obstacles to opportunity.

In situations where schools are found to be unsatisfactory and receive the lowest possible rating, the government will maintain its role in stepping in.
The Department for Education (DfE) indicated that this might involve mandating a conversion to academy status for certain maintained schools, potentially resulting in a shift to different management.
Ms. Phillipson previously stated: "It is abundantly evident that reforms in Ofsted are necessary to elevate and maintain high standards for every child in all schools."
