Red Bull’s Strategy Shuffle: Navigating the Exit of Jonathan Wheatley and the Search for a New Sporting Director
New challenge arises for Red Bull as Jonathan Wheatley exits
"It's been suggested that Gianpiero Lambiase could step into the role of sporting director"
The challenge faced by Red Bull in finding a replacement for Jonathan Wheatley has been highlighted.
Wheatley is set to leave his position as the sporting director of Red Bull when this season concludes, moving on to take up the role of team principal at Audi.
Audi is adamant that he will come on board no later than July 2025, following a break for gardening leave, while Red Bull has committed to seeking a successor from within their ranks.
On the Sky F1 podcast, Ted Kravitz posed the question: "Who will be his successor? Given his critical role in understanding the regulations and maintaining a highly competitive racing team, how will they manage the transition?
"There are several individuals at Red Bull who started their careers as mechanics and have ascended to high-ranking positions. Wheatley, for instance, once held the position of chief mechanic at Benetton."
"It's easy to picture those individuals advancing; they're also familiar with the regulations."
There has been speculation among some that Gianpiero Lambiase could potentially step into the role of sporting director.
"I believe he's not keen on giving up the excitement and enjoyment found in weekly racing."
"It's enjoyable, until it suddenly isn't. There's joy in claiming victory in races and securing championships. I'm uncertain whether GP is keen on giving that up.
"Red Bull plans to fill positions internally. They are considering bringing on board two individuals: a lead mechanic responsible for overseeing the pit crew during races, and a person with a deep understanding of the regulations to take on the role of sporting director."
Wheatley has shared insights into his role as a sporting director, highlighting how his understanding of F1 regulations benefits Red Bull on race days: "The approach I take to my work might seem crazy to some, as I meticulously consider all possible scenarios, scrutinize the regulations, and anticipate the team's responses to devise strategies."
Jonathan Wheatley faces media scrutiny as Audi gears up for its grand 2026 debut, with Wheatley stepping in as team principal and Mattia Binotti taking the reins as Chief Operating and Chief Technical Officer, highlighting the company's significant investment in their venture.
"Wheatley has his work cut out for him, collaborating with Binotto, a colleague he's already familiar with," stated Kravitz.
"He is recognized for his mastery in understanding regulations. No one globally surpasses his knowledge of the rule book."
"He must familiarize himself with all the individuals' names, grasp the language, and comprehend their operational methods before deciding if any alterations are necessary."
"Is he going to attend the meeting with the team leaders, or is he going to let Binotto handle it?"
Kravitz mentioned, "The expert on rules, known for clinching Red Bull races and titles due to his deep understanding of the regulations and their tactical application, is departing.
Was it always his goal to become a team principal? It seems likely. He's driven, just like the majority of individuals involved in F1.
"Christian Horner remains in his position. Previously, Wheatley had been speculated by the press to be a possible successor to Horner if the need arose, a scenario that has since been dismissed."
"I don't believe Wheatley would have made his name known to the press.
Wheatley is set to confront the press. To my knowledge, there hasn’t been a thorough interview featuring Wheatley. Red Bull has given us the green light to engage with him, specifically on the topic of Red Bull excelling in pit stop performance.
"Wheatley is set to conduct his inaugural major interviews with individuals."
