Red Bull’s Strategic Shift: Christian Horner Unveils Iterative Upgrade Plan Amidst RB20’s Track Challenges
Christian Horner details Red Bull's enhancement strategy, offering an interesting comparison with the RB model
Christian Horner has clarified that Red Bull is not aiming to roll out a major F1 update in 2024, choosing instead to focus on a gradual improvement strategy to address their current challenges.
In two out of the last three competitions, Red Bull did not secure the victory.
Lando Norris emerged victorious in Miami while Charles Leclerc secured a win in Monaco.
Norris nearly clinched consecutive races, coming in a close second to Max Verstappen at Imola by a mere 0.7 seconds.
Red Bull seems to have difficulties on tracks characterized by slow speeds, uneven surfaces, and heavy reliance on kerb riding.
Fascinatingly, Horner implied that the affiliate team, Visa Cash App RB, which utilizes identical suspension systems, has not encountered the same problems as Red Bull.
Horner, in a conversation with journalists, including those from Crash.net in Monaco, expressed that it's an ongoing journey. He explained that, naturally, you encounter the principle of diminishing returns, and inevitably, where you direct your attention shifts based on the challenges you face.
"Therefore, I believe there will be a significant amount of attention directed towards understanding why we've been facing problems with the rides. What's causing the car to have difficulties with the kerbs?"
"The VCARB vehicle is operating on our previous year's suspension system and appears not to be encountering the same problems. Thus, it's imperative for us to figure out if the issue stems from something new we've implemented."
Red Bull has been the dominant force under the current regulations, with only four races eluding their grasp since last year began.
Taking this element into account, it's understandable to hear Horner acknowledge that Red Bull is approaching the "point of diminishing returns" when it comes to additional development.
"He elaborated, stating, "I believe our approach is more about gradual improvement. Clearly, we've acquired various components along the way, and they've all lived up to their promises."
"However, as you approach the peak of the curve, you encounter the principle of diminishing returns concerning the extent of development that justifies its inclusion on the vehicle. Additionally, with the implementation of a cost cap, it's imperative to be judicious about the timing of integrating those enhancements."
