Red Bull’s Sergio Perez Blames ‘Big Hole’ in Sidepod for Disappointing Finish Behind Haas in Austria
Red Bull explains that a “large gap” in the sidepod of Sergio Perez's F1 car caused him to lose to Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg during the Austrian Grand Prix, according to team principal Christian Horner.
Perez faced yet another challenging race at the Red Bull Ring, ultimately securing a seventh-place finish.
In the final laps, the Mexican driver was competing against Hulkenberg but eventually came up short.
Analyzing the outcomes, Perez had a disappointing performance, especially considering he was outperformed by Max Verstappen, who dealt with a puncture and a time penalty after his incident with Lando Norris.
Nonetheless, Horner clarified that extensive harm to Perez's vehicle led to a substantial decrease in its straight-line speed.
Horner commented to the press, including Crash.net, “Checo had a challenging race once more. He experienced substantial contact during the first lap.”
"He had a significant gap in the sidepod, which resulted in a decrease in straight-line speed, similar to the effect of an air brake."
"That's the reason he had issues with straight-line speed. It’s challenging to evaluate Checo's performance because of the damage he incurred."
Horner was unable to quantify the amount of lap time Perez was losing, but he characterized it as "significant."
“I’m not sure of the precise figures,” Horner mentioned.
"He told me that a substantial gap had emerged, and according to the data, this was causing a major loss."
Perez lost valuable time during the race due to a five-second penalty he received for exceeding the speed limit in the pit lane.
Looking back on the race, Perez commented, “The sidepod sustained significant damage. I had a minor collision with Piastri at Turn 4, but I’m not sure if that’s where the damage originated.”
"It was disappointing since we began strongly, but after that, the car was completely unresponsive, and there was nothing I could do as it felt unbalanced. Additionally, I made an error entering the pit lane by misusing the pit limiter. Overall, it was a disastrous race that had initially shown promise."
"There was simply no chance of competing with others because we were too slow and falling behind."
